Vu Nhat Tan performing with live bassist, Bush Lam represents an exciting collaboration as Hanoi’s old guard hooks up with its hottest young talent.

Tan has been flying the flag for experimental and electronic music in the capital for as long as anyone can remember. Through his noise groups, DJ sets, classical compositions and lectures at the Hanoi Conservatory,

Tan has introduced a generation of Hanoians to a world of music which wouldn’t otherwise reach them. It’s fitting then that for his ATK performance on Saturday the 18th, he’ll have one of Vietnam’s most exciting young musicians accompanying him on live bass. Anyone who’s heard any of Bush’s myriad musical projects or seen one of his filthy, bass heavy DJ sets knows he’s one to watch.

Vietnam – Korean Exchange Exhibition

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Viet Nam and Korea, the Korean Cultural Center organizes an exchange exhibition among Vietnamese and Korean artists. This exhibition includes oil paintings, lacquer paintings, graphic designs of 8 talented Vietnamese artists (Ngo Quang Nam, Doan Hong, Nguyen Van Cuong, Tran Yen The, Vu Bach Lien, Cong Quoc Thang, Ha ANh Tuan, Vu Viet Cuong) together with art lecturers and ceramic artists from Korea (Min Gi Hi, Lee Myung-Ah, Jang Jin, Han Hyung Lim, Ro Hae Sin và Kim Jong In).

Each of the art works describe different characteristic of different cultures. If the Vietnamese artists often draw the scenery, the Vietnamese people, the buffalo, the bamboo trees, the soldiers, etc, the Korean artists represent the delicacy on ceramic.

In addition, the talk on 17th Feb is an opportunity for the artisans of two countries to learn from each other and exchange ideas for the future art scenes.

Screening of “With or Without me” at DOCLAB

You are invited to a film screening “With or Without Me”, a work partnered by Phương Thảo Trần (Vietnamese) and Swann Dubus (French), the film won Planète Rouge 2011 award by Marseille International Film Festival 2011 and was featured at Torino Film Festival 2011.

Thi and Trung live in the lush, rice-terraced mountains of Vietnam’s far northwest territory of Điện Biên. Like many young people in this region (which is on the main heroin route from Laos to China), they are addicts and are also HIV positive. Forced to live a life marked by the efforts of family members, friends and doctors to keep them away from drugs, Thi wants to kick his habit but Trung just wants to die.

Showing the daily struggle of living with drugs and the devastating consequences of addiction, the camera becomes a part of their existence and reveals how their ‘habit’ destroys their hopes and dreams. Through showing the destinies and tragedy of two individual lives, the film sheds a light upon a wider unfolding story about drug use in Vietnam and, in doing so, it hopes to contribute to the debate about how best to tackle this issue.

Screening of “Mother’s Soul”

Friends of Vietnam Heritage is pleased to invite you to our film showing of Mother’s Soul (Tâm hồn mẹ) on Wednesday February 22nd at Cinematheque Hanoi. The latest film by reputed female director Nhuệ Giang, Mother’s Soul won Best Actress Award at Dubai International Film Festival 2011 for the heartbreaking and nuanced performance of the 12-year-old actress Phùng Hoa Hoài Linh.

Based on a short story of the same name written by Nguyễn Huy Thiệp in the late 1980s, Mother’s soul tells the story of a mother and her daughter who live on an island in the middle of the Red River in Hanoi.

When her mother falls in love with a driver, the nine-year-old girl suffers from the lack of maternal attention. As the mother become more and more obsessed with her lover, the daughter unwittingly takes on a maternal role herself to the orphan next door until an accident changes their lives forever. Through these tender human relationships, Mother’s Soul looks at the effect of capitalism on a former communist economy.

Video Screening and Talk with Meiro Koizumi

Hanoi DOCLAB is pleased to present a video screening and talk with Japanese artist Meiro Koizumi. Dislocation and the fetishisation of relationships underlie the work of Koizumi. The artist uses video in a way that documents performances, conversations and constructed scenarios to explore the psychology of urban relationships and modern living.

Meiro Koizumi was born in Gunma in 1976, he currently lives and works in Yokohama, Japan. He studied in London at Chelsea Art and Design School and in Amsterdam at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten Institute. Selected solo exhibitions include: ‘Broken Hero, Beautiful Afternoon’ Artspace, Sydney, Australia; ‘Total Ecstasy’, Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; ‘MAM Project 009: Meiro Koizumi’, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.

Koizumi will screen and talk about his works and art practice.

Koizumi’s talk is made possible with supports from Japan Foundation and Goethe Institut Hanoi.

Music Night with Machete.Sex.Mix and Gỗ Lim

This Saturday, two prominent bands of Hanoi who have really put the word ‘live’ into ‘live music’ go head to head in a night that will be so loud you’re likely to still hear the echoes on Valentine’s Day.

Go Lim’s first show since …December 2011. The last show of Machete.Sex.Mix. In the words and spirit of Led Zep, that adds up to a whole lotta love and a whole lotta minutes of great music.

Each band comes with their respective quirks and an array of refreshing electronic and guitar effects that combine with a classic instrument set up to build songs that sound fresh. Stylistically as well as technically, Go Lim and Machete.Sex.Mix have creatively distinguished themselves so far apart and beyond the ‘same old indie’ stereotype that it feels misleading to apply the term at all. Throw into the mix the perpetual energy of the band members and on-stage antics of the two, skinhead lead vocalists (front woman Nhi of Go Lim and Jacques ‘The Wolf’ of MSM) and you end up with something that is not only musically but also visually distinctive.

Whatever words you might choose to describe their music – experimental, punk, metal, rock, electronic, contemporary, all or none of the above, or something that there isn’t even a name for yet, none of this can give more than a fraction of insight into the experience of seeing these bands perform in action.

What we’re saying is, if you’ve been in the front row of one of their shows then you’ve probably been jumped on. If you’ve been in the back row of one of their shows then you’ve probably been jumped on.

We don’t know about you, Hanoi, but we like being jumped on.

Screening and Talk with Yu Araki

Hanoi DOCLAB is pleased to present a screening and talk with young Japanese video artist Yu Araki. YU ARAKI has participated in numerous national and international screenings, including “Theory of Everything” (7th and 8th screening, curated by Yuki Okumura), and was selected for the 56th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (with MIACA).

Araki received his B.F.A. in Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts (USA), and his master’s degree in New Media from Tokyo University of Arts. His research concerning ‘the relationship regarding the camera and the self’ is highlighted in the work “Deep Search,” a voyage in which the artist swallows a miniature camera to search for a small figurine in his internal organs. He was one of the four artists selected to participate in the Local-Creator-in-Residence Program at Tokyo Wonder Site Aoyama in 2011-12.

The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents an art exhibition “the plastic model of paramodel is paramodel” by an internationally acclaimed art unit paramodel. paramodel is an art unit formed in 2001 by Hayashi Yasuhiko and Nakano Yusuke. Their title is essentially a manifesto in sum – fusing the words Paradise, Paradox, and Model. In addition, it plays upon the Japanese word Puramoderu (toy plastic dioramas).

Through elaborate combinations of plastic toys parts with other everyday objects, they attempt to create blueprints of Paradise whilst underscoring life’s paradoxes. paramodel’s expansive artworks range from massive, room-scaling installations, to mini-sculptures, with videos, drawing, and photography, and other media in between.

Their artworks are fun, pop and eye-catching, and always invite viewers to feel back in their childhood. They simply use toys and everyday objects in ways that anyone, without any knowledge of art, can easily understand.

Through two weeks residency in Hanoi, paramodel will cover the whole space of the Japan Foundation’s house with Japanese and Vietnamese toys and everyday objects to create their site-specific installation.

They will also conduct a workshop from 14:00 to 16:00 on Friday 17 February at Vietnam University of Fine Arts (42 Yet Kieu Str., Hanoi). In the workshop, paramodel will explain how to create their artworks through power point presentation, and the participants will also try creating works in paramodelic ways.

Admission is free but pre-registration is required for the workshop.

About paramodel: An art unit formed in 2001 by Hayashi Yasuhiko (Fine Arts Graduate from the Kyoto City University of Arts) and Nakano Yusuke (a Nihonga [Japanese-style painting] graduate from the same university). They received the honor of Sakuya Konohana Award in 2008 from Osaka City, Japan.

Screening of “Chelsea Girls”

Video Art Video cordially invite you to the screening of Chelsea Girls by Andy Warhol. Chelsea Girls is a 1966 experimental underground film directed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film was Warhol’s first major commercial success after a long line of avant-garde art films (both feature length and short).

It was shot at the Hotel Chelsea and other locations in New York City, and follows the lives of several of the young women who live there, and stars many of Warhol’s superstars. It is presented in asplit screen, accompanied by alternating soundtracks attached to each scene and an alternation between black-and-white and color photography. The original cut runs at just over three hours long.

The title, Chelsea Girls, is a reference to the location in which the film takes place. It was the inspiration for star Nico’s 1967 debut album,Chelsea Girl. The album featured a ballad-like track titled “Chelsea Girls”, written about the hotel and its inhabitants who appear in the film.

The screening is non-profit and aims for studies and research only. Following the screening is Q&A session.

Discussion “Japan – An Artist’s Playground”

San Art is pleased to present ‘Japan – an artist’s playground’ – an informal discussion between Tokyo Wonder Site, Japan; San Art and visiting artists Meiro Koizumi (Yokohama), Yu Araki (Tokyo); Ryusuke Kido (Tokyo); Masaru Iwai (Tokyo), Khvay Samnang (Phnom Penh), Tran Minh Duc (HCMC).

‘Japan – an artist’s playground’ will be a rare opportunity to hear the experiences of artists on residency with Tokyo Wonder Site. You will hear how they have been inspired by Japan and what kind of work they subsequently created/performed. You will discover how Tokyo Wonder Site works and how this dynamic organization might offer an opportunity for you!

Guest artists will speak specifically about their involvement in the TWS ‘Aoyama: Creator-in-Residence’ program, initiated in 2006, as a venue for creative individuals from all genres and nationalities to pursue their respective work in a shared process.

In 2011, San Art and Tokyo Wonder Site initiated an exchange residency program. Ho Chi Minh City-based artist Tran Minh Duc and Yokohama-based artist Meiro Koizumi are collaborative partners in this exchange and San Art welcomes Meiro to Ho Chi Minh City for his solo show, opening at San Art on 23 February, 2012.

This event is free and open to the public.

Event will be held in Vietnamese and English.

Happy New Year! With the beginning of the new year, we’re extremely delighted to present for the second time 8 DOCLAB workshop films freshly completed after 6 months of experimentation, and hard work. Through this process of experimental documentary film-making, we aim to foster the personal voice and independent visions on our contemporary society among young people, filmmakers and artists in Vietnam.

Piano Recital of Marie Vermeulin

You are invited to a piano recital with Marie Vermeulin.Student ofJacqueline Dussol, and then Marie-Paule Siruguet at Music Academy of Boulogne, she was the full time student from 2001 to 2004 at Lyon Music Academy under the guidance of Hortense Cartier-Bresson and Edson Elias.
At the same time, she received training for 4 years with Lazar Berman. After that, she was under the guidance of Roger Muraro, and it was the time she learnt more about French works in the 20th century.

In December 2009, she was awarded with the prize “Pro Musicis” to bring precious moment to the disabled and the underprivileged who could not have a chance to attend classical concert.

Screening of “Madamoiselle Chambon”

Exhibition “One Corner of France”

You are invited to the exhibition “One Corner of France” of artist Le Nguyen Duy Phuong. French portraits have come to Vietnam “the way I see my country in their experience”. The feelings are expressed towards the beauty of lights, the reflection of loneliness and the silents.

Apart from the portraits on the screen are photographs on alumec, reflecting a sensitive eyes.

After his participation in the National Photography University of Arles (France) in the end of 2008, the young photographer Le Nguyen Duy Phuong held his exhibition in October 2009 at the famous Quai Brandly Museum (France) titled “Photoquai – the Meetings of Perspectives”.

The exhibition “One Corner of France” is the result of 2 previous exhibition in France from 2008 to 2010: one collection of portraits that had been displayed in Vietnam and one collection “My Experience about France” depicting feelings on the beauty of the change of lights due to the change of season.

Music Night with Alex Millan

In 2010, he released his album «The collection : Triple» (DJ Center). Many of songs in his album are songs with Depeche Mode, Daft Punk, Paul Kalkbrenner, Trentemoller, James Zabiela…

He creates his own music style by combining rhythm, melody and sadness. With his experience and emotion, he is one of the most popular electronic music stars.

Rock Show with Ngu Cung and Thrasher

Exhibition “Drops of Spring”

You are invited to an painting exhibition by artist Nguyen Quoc Dung titled “Drops of Spring”. Nguyen Quoc Dung follows the European Realism, a style consisting many criteria that became a main stream one in Vietnam with the establishment of Indochina Fine Arts College in 1926 in Hanoi. And while he’s obsessed by concepts in western classical art, Dzung is also influenced by eastern culture and by traditional style, too. This might be the only tiny deterrent in the understanding between viewers and painter.
