There was a Broadway bloodbath this week — proving marquee names failed to draw the big crowds producers anticipated.
A Broadway source tells [email protected] that the play made it to the Great White Way simply because Holmes agreed to star. Now its future rests entirely on her shoulders.
“Katie is a curiosity. She is not a Broadway actress,” the source says. “But I don’t believe that anyone will pull the rug out on her. I don’t believe Katie’s team would stand for it.”
Gifford on the other hand, did not command even a fraction of that respect. “Scandalous,” her musical about the life of early 20th-century Christian evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson, was yanked after just three weeks, due to low ticket sales and scathing reviews.
Still, a “heartbroken” Gifford tried to save the show last week, going hat-in-hand back to her multimillionaire investors, Dick and Betsy DeVos, asking for more money in a last-ditch effort to rescue her beloved project, a source tells us. The “Today” host, who had not invested even a dime of her own money, had worked hard on the project for a dozen years.
“The DeVoses had given her more money than originally planned, but at some point it became clear it was a hopeless cause,” a source tells [email protected]’s Marianne Garvey. “She asked for another $500,000, but it didn’t go her way.”
The writing was on the wall Dec. 2, when the show had only grossed $370,243 for the week, which on Broadway, spells doom.
There were also whispers around Broadway that gays who work in the biz — including many involved with Gifford’s show — weren’t exactly sad to see the show tank. That’s because her backers included a controversial house of worship, the Foursquare Church of Santa Monica, Calif. The church is anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion and is the church that McPherson — Gifford’s character — founded in 1923.
“To say the gays were in an uproar is putting it tame,” our source said. “She made a deal with the Devil and lost the church $10 million.”
“Scandalous” closes Sunday.
Foursquare Church did not return a call seeking comment by deadline.
J.LO & CASPER EYE THE RING THING
It’s hard to tell Christmas bells from wedding bells around this time of year.
Jennifer Lopez and her boyfriend, Casper Smart, raised eyebrows in Perth, Australia, on Thursday, where they were spied checking out diamond rings at Tiffany & Co.
Though the pair have been dating for more than a year, a Lopez spokesman tells us not to be fooled by the rocks that she’s got.
“Jennifer and Beau (his given name) were not shopping for wedding rings,” the rep assures us.
And despite reports that Brad Pitt was shopping for wedding bands last week at Neil Lane jewelers in L.A., a source now tells [email protected], “Brad was in the store shopping for rings, but not ‘THE’ ring. He was actually buying Christmas gifts.”
While our insider says Pitt did take home “some trays of bands,” we’re told “they were funky everyday kind of things that he likes to wear, not wedding bands.”
But save the date! Our spy says he and Angelina Jolie “are certainly getting close to getting wedding bands,” and confirms “stylists have been in the store to scout wedding bands for him.”
A-ROD: MAN WITHOUT A HOME
Hip surgery will cause A-Rod to miss the beginning of the 2013 baseball season, but the Yankees slugger is still thinking about home base. Alex Rodriguez was recently heard telling his jewelry designing pal Loree Rodkin that he still hasn’t found a new home since putting his 20,000-square-foot beach house on the market in August. A-Rod was seen at Art Basel Wednesday eyeballing a $4.5 million Andy Warhol Statue of Liberty painting that would look good in any pad.
LILO PAL GIVES HIS REGRETS
Artist Domingo Zapata has never lacked imagination, but even he’s run out of ideas for his old pal LiLo. “I feel bad for her, but she has closer friends than me who can help her,” Lindsay Lohan’s buddy told [email protected] at Miami’s Wall nightclub Wednesday night. He said, sadly, “she is my good friend but I can’t really help her.” Lohan at the time was in Philadelphia signing autographs and watching Psy perform at Q102’s Jingle Ball.
THE BRIDE PLANS, & KIMMEL SAYS YES
Jimmy Kimmel is leaving every last detail of his upcoming wedding to his fiancée, Molly McNearney. The TV host and his head writer spouse-to-be aim to tie the knot in 2013, but planning “just isn’t Kimmel’s thing,” a source tells [email protected] Among the A-list guests will be Kimmel’s best pal, Howard Stern, and his wife, Beth, who threw the couple a lavish engagement party over the summer.
AT HER BIRTHDAY, ZARIN GETS SERVED
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. Jill Zarin wanted a sweet birthday bash. What she got was a roast — of herself. The ex-“Real Housewives of New York” star got blasted at the Stand Restaurant and Comedy Club, where comic Dante Nero kicked off the show by telling Zarin’s husband, Bobby, to “shut up.” He then told Zarin herself to “shut the f— up,” too. “Jill was a good sport about it,” said one eyewitness. “She had 50 guests with her and they were all celebrating.”
THE ‘TODAY’ GANG STARTS EARLY
“The Today Show” threw its annual holiday bash at the Dream Downtown hotel Thursday, where the early bird crowd started partying at 11:35 a.m., right after the morning show wrapped. “They had their first cocktail then, and the party ended with the whole staff doing “ ‘Gangnam Style,’ ” a source tells [email protected], citing the ubiquitous dance hit by Psy. “It was a great party. Everyone was rallying.”
SIDIBE A GOOD FIT WITH MIZRAHI
Isaac Mizrahi has a soul mate in Gabourey Sidibe. The designer and the “Precious” star, who are on Showtime’s “The C Word” together, have become best friends. “We are now like the new Tracy and Hepburn. We have fantastic chemistry,” Mizrahi told [email protected] at a gala in honor of the Australia Council for the Arts. “You can feel it; it’s palpable. Best-friends chemistry.” Also in attendance were Sarah Jessica Parker, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts.
GREER GIVES HUBBY TOUGH ROLE
Luckily for Judy Greer, her hubby, Dean Johnsen, isn’t the jealous type. At the Cinema Society “Playing for Keeps” after-party at PH-D lounge, she told us that watching her onscreen kisses with Gerard Butler was just the latest test he’s endured. “I just came off kissing George Clooney in a movie [“The Descendants”], then Ashton Kutcher on a TV show [“Two and a Half Men”],” she said. “My poor husband was like, ‘Really’? We weren’t even engaged yet at the time.”
VERGARA’S GOT WINDOW APPEAL
Curtains are so overrated. Sofia Vergara peeked through a window and popped out of her brassiere while shooting John Turturro’s “Fading Gigolo.” The 40-year-old star, who famously wears a 32F bra, stars alongside Woody Allen, Sharon Stone and Vanessa Paradis in the comedy flick due out next year.
MISS N.Y. LIKES THE CROWN HEIGHTS
First New York, then the world! When [email protected] asked Miss New York Mallory Hagan what she wanted for Christmas, she didn’t give the requisite “World Peace” answer. “The Miss America crown!” she proclaimed. “The finals are in January.” Hagan, a 23-year-old FIT student, is known for her tap-dancing talents.
