The AIDSfree campaign, launched this month in conjunction with the Elton John AIDS Foundation, is aiming to tackle the epidemic across the world and boost the number of people being tested for HIV by supporting projects in London, Nairobi, Atlanta, Kiev, Delhi and Maputo.
Wanyama, who has played more than 50 times for Kenya, said he was supporting the foundation and added: “Why? Because 37m people around the world are living with HIV.
“A quarter do not know they are infected, as Elton John showed on day one of the campaign.
“HIV testing is easy and if you know your status, you can get medical care to protect you from getting sick or passing HIV to anyone else.
“It’s our goal to create an AIDS free future… make it your goal by texting your donation today.”
You can give £5 or £10 by texting GIVE5 or GIVE10 to 70755, or alternately you can donate by using the Donate Now button on this page.
The 12 Days of Christmas series will feature a message from a high-profile backer or HIV campaigner each day pledging support for our campaign through to Christmas Eve.
Texts will be charged at your donation plus your standard network rate. Please ask for bill payer’s permission. The Elton John AIDS Foundation will receive 100% of your gift. If donating to the Elton John AIDS Foundation via JustGiving, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/info/terms-of-service to view their full Ts&Cs
Money raised from public donations through the AIDSfree appeal will be used to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation projects in six key cities around the world (London, Nairobi, Atlanta, Kiev, Delhi and Maputo). Through UK Aid Match the UK government will double public donations up to £2m to be spent across projects in Maputo and Nairobi.
