THERE are hundreds of insurers promising to provide you with the best phone insurance, and each offer a wide – and often confusing – array of features.
To help you decide which is right for you and your device, we’ve gone through the policies of the top gadget insurers in the UK to find the best phone insurance deals.
All of our selections have a maximum 2019 Defaqto rating of five stars, and none tie you into lengthy contracts.
We chose to go by Defaqto ratings because the organisation is an independent service that regularly compares financial products based on the features and benefits they offer.
- Eyeing up a new iPhone? Here’s where you can buy one cheapest
For each provider, we compared quotes and policies for a 64GB iPhone XS because iPhones are typically higher value than most other handsets, so tend to be more expensive to insure.
This means the quotes below are likely to represent the most you’d pay.
1. The best phone insurance for price
- Captain Cover gadget insurance – buy now
If you can get past its cheesy branding and equally cheesy policy names, Captain Cover is a leading phone and tablet insurer with more than 25 years in the industry.
It offers worldwide and loss cover as standard on all policies and has designed its excess charges to be cheap and easy to understand.
For a 64GB iPhone XS, Captain Cover offers three levels of coverage: Cadet (entry-level), Captain (mid-level) and Commander (premium-level). The former is £8.99 a month – or £98.89 went bought as an annual package – and includes cover for loss and theft, mechanical breakdown, 90 days worldwide cover, unauthorised usage up to £500 and accessory cover up to £150.
All with a £100 excess. Captain Cover offers the same features but its excess is just £50 for £9.99 a month (£109.98 annually), while the Commander package adds accidental and liquid damage for £11.49 (£126.39 annually).
You can cancel at any time on these policies and will get a like-for-like replacement where appropriate.
2. The best phone insurance for features
- Insurance2Go phone insurance – buy now
Insurance2Go offers affordable, flexible policies for all sorts of gadgets.
All of its Standard phone policies cover for loss, theft, accessories (up to £150), overseas cover (up to 90 days a year), unauthorised mobile payments (up to £100), unauthorised use (up to £1,000), and cover for you and your immediate family.
Alternatively, its Full Cover packages add cover for accidental damage, malicious damage, liquid damage and mechanical breakdown.
There are no contracts or admin fees, and you can claim online all-year round. For a 64GB iPhone XS, the Full Cover package costs £9.99 a month, or £109.99 for annual cover.
There is a catch though. You can only get Insurance2Go policies if your phone is less than six months old at the time you sign up, and you must be 18 years or over to purchase the policy.
It doesn’t cover second-hand gadgets or phones bought outside the UK, either.
3. The best phone insurance for choice

The first three plans come with a £5 Debenhams gift card and the bundle plan comes with a £10 card.
For a 64GB iPhone XS, Debenhams Standard Personal Cover, which includes accidental damage, liquid damage, mechanical Breakdown, cracked screen, £50 accessory cover and 60 days of worldwide cover, costs £10.50 a month.
For £12, its Premium Cover adds cover for theft and loss, increases accessory cover to £150 and boosts worldwide cover to 120 days.
