Jakarta. HOOQ has launched 19 new original programs from Southeast Asia, 13 of them from Indonesia, as part of a brand campaign to further cement its position as the region’s leading video-on-demand service.
The new programs consist of 12 series and seven movies.
“We’re very, very proud to work with unbelievable partners to produce great stories that have never been seen before,” HOOQ chief executive Peter Bithos said during the launch in Jakarta on Oct. 3.
He said HOOQ was collaborating with MD Entertainment, Marawa and Starvision in Indonesia.
“[The movies] ‘Sunyi,’ ‘Habibie & Ainun 3,’ ‘Danur 3: Sunyaruri’ and ‘Cek Toko Sebelah’ are part of the new productions that will be launched on HOOQ,” Bithos said.
Guntur Siboro, HOOQ’s country head for Indonesia, said the large number of subscribers in the archipelago served as a motivating factor for adding the new local content.
“Among the five countries where HOOQ is operating, Indonesian users make up 60 percent to 70 percent, hence the big portion [of our productions coming from this country]. As for the investment, it’s millions of dollars, but we cannot disclose the amount,” Guntur said.
Explaining the reason behind the brand campaign, Bithos said: “HOOQ started five years ago, with a few people. Along the way, we learned that telling great stories is a journey for the people of Southeast Asia, and that’s what they’ve always been passionate about.”
“From January through September 2019 alone, more than 51 percent of total playing minutes came from Southeast Asian content. These consumption habits drove our decision to stay laser-focused on building strong partnerships with the biggest studios, networks, production companies, screenwriters and directors to bring our customer the best of local, regional, Hollywood movies, television shows and short form,” said Jennifer Batty, chief content officer at HOOQ.
She added that the brand campaign was aimed at celebrating Asian stories and storytellers.
HOOQ currently operates in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and India. However, despite its growing success, Bithos said HOOQ would not expand outside the region.
“We love this region… We would like one day to do Vietnam, maybe Malaysia. But right now, we’re happy to be in these five countries. That’s about 500 million people. That’s a lot of people,” Bithos said.
Actors from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Singapore, including Laura Basuki and Oka Antara, who starred in the crime series “Brata,” and Nadine Lustre who starred in “Ulan,” also attended the launch.
