Video PlayerClose BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) — Chinese shares continued to retreat Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edging down 0.61 percent to close at 3,234.82 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.92 percent lower at 12,742.85 points. The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices shrank to 873.2 billion yuan (about 127.69 billion U.S. dollars) from 1.04 trillion yuan the previous trading day. Shipbuilders were among the biggest losers, with the share price of CSSC Science and Technology slumping 6.55 percent. Liquor makers were among the few firms that saw their share prices rise Thursday, with the leading liquor producer Kweichow Moutai gaining 1.05 percent.
