Chennai: The severe cyclonic storm Nivar wreaked havoc in Chennai, parts of the northern coast of Tamil Nadu besides Puducherry hours before it made landfall. The very severe storm brought heavy rainfall and gusty winds damaging power and communication poles, damaging houses and leaving thousands of people in relief shelters in places including Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Myladuthurai, Puducherry, Villupuram Chengalpattu in Tamilnadu besides Puducherry and Karaikal. The low-lying areas went under sheets of water as the severe cyclonic storm intensified on Wednesday. It is likely to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamalappuram around Puducherry on Wednesday night or Thursday. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) has reportedly forecast that the landfall is likely to occur around Mamallapuram and Kalpakkam around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. Gale wind speed reaching 105-115 kmph gusting to 130 kmph prevailed over Southwest Bay of Bengal. It further increased to 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph by Wednesday afternoon.
