PUTRAJAYA: Parents can proceed to pick up their children at higher learning institutions located at districts in Selangor that will be placed under the movement control order.
Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the decision is to allow university students to cross borders and go home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri remains.
He said it is not affected by the decision to place the MCO on six districts in the state from May 6 to 17.
The districts affected are Hulu Langat, Petaling, Gombak, Klang, Kuala Langat and Sepang.
“The National Security Council (NSC) has decided to allow parents to fetch their children although the MCO has already come into effect by then,” he said on Tuesday (May 4).
The Higher Education Ministry announced that all students – except those in Sarawak – would be allowed to travel interstate from their campus to their homes and return on designated dates in May.
The dates for students to head home are from May 7 to 12, and they will return to campus from May 15 to 20.
The ministry had said several control mechanisms would be in place to ensure the students’ movement is monitored, including travelling in phases.
The respective institutions will prepare an exemption letter for students and also coordinate the dates of departure and return for each student.
Only three modes of travel are allowed – personal or vehicles of parents, or buses arranged by the respective institutions.
Students are not allowed to travel home on public transport, except on flights.
Out of a total of 1.3 million students from higher learning institutions, the ministry expected the exodus to involve 104,994 students who were previously allowed back on campus for teaching and learning sessions.
