German haute-couture designer Karl Lagerfeld, artistic director at Chanel and an icon of the global fashion industry for over half a century, has died, a source at the French fashion house said on Tuesday. He was 85. Lagerfeld, instantly recognisable in his dark suits, pony-tailed white hair and sun glasses, was best known for his association with Chanel but delivered collections for LVMH's Fendi and his own eponymous label. Rumours of Lagerfeld's ill-health had swirled after he missed Chanel's January show in Paris. "We have lost a creative genius who helped to make Paris the fashion capital of the world and Fendi one of the most innovative Italian houses," LVMH chairman and chief executive Bernard Arnault said in a statement. More than a year since the Marawi siege, some former members of the Maute group have surfaced to surrender. Those who surrendered, however, admitted they are now worried about how they will be accepted by the society. One of those who surrendered, alias "Khalid," belongs to a middle class family. He said he joined the group due to his desire to have a sin-free community. He later left the group when he discovered that the group's ideology goes against Islamic teachings. Farmers "Omar" and "Maminta" said they joined the group because they were tempted to earn more money. They also admitted recruiting impoverished friends to the group. News Pangilinan bats for resumption of oil exploration in Reed Bank
MANILA - PXP Energy Corp chairman Manny Pangilinan on Tuesday said he has asked the government to lift the ban on energy exploration in a disputed area of the West Philippine Sea where the company has a service contract. Pangilinan said he has written the Department of Energy asking to allow exploration in Reed Bank to determine if there is gas in the area and see if gas can be extracted in commercial quantities. PXP Energy holds the right to drill in Reed Bank, which is claimed by both Manila and Beijing. Drilling in the area off the coast of Palawan was put on hold following several tense encounters at sea in late 2014, as the Aquino government pursued international arbitration. News Now a law: Government to create state of the art, ‘scientific’ sports center
MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law that paves the way for the creation of a state of the art and highly scientific sports center. Duterte signed on Feb. 14 Republic Act 11214 which provides for the establishment of the Philippine Sports Training Center, which shall serve as the “official home and primary venue for the development of athletes in the national team.” The training center shall have various amenities, including a baseball field, beach volleyball courts, bowling center, covered swimming and diving pool, a football field, gymnastics center, multi-purpose gymnasium, multi-purpose field, a rugby pitch, skeet and trap range, softball field, track and field oval, tennis courts, velodrome, weight training building, and other smaller facilities. The training center will get a P3.5 billion funding from the General Appropriations Act and will be owned and managed by the Philippine Sports Commission.
