The researchers at Houston Methodist Research Institute have found a way to reverse aging of human cells. The study on children with progeria disease found the remedy for aging and early deaths.Progeria is the genetic abnormality which causes aging and early death of children and it was best portrayed in Bollywood film 'Paa' wherein actor Amitabh Bachchan has enacted the role of a boy suffering from the disease. Dr. John Cooke, the lead author of the research paper published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology said, "We can make aged cells younger."Dr. John Cooke's team focused on the telomeres of patients' cells, the tip of chromosomes which decreases its length with age. They used a method known as RNA therapeutics for lengthening the telomeres through the production of its molecular protein telomerase. The technique was found to give a positive response in lab research as the modal cells had increased their lifespan.Cooke said, "Before, cells would multiply very … [Read more...] about Getting old? Are you suffering from heart disease? A treatment with Vitamin D3 might help restore damage to your cardiovascular system, finds a study. Vitamin D3 is produced naturally when skin is exposed to the sun or through over-the-counter pills. Several diseases, including high blood pressure, build-up of fats, cholesterol in and on the artery walls, and diabetes, can cause damage to the cardiovascular system thus increasing the risk of heart attack. However, taking Vitamin D3 -- associated with the bones -- at doses higher than those currently used for the treatment of bone diseases may be highly beneficial for the treatment of the dysfunctional cardiovascular system, the study showed. "Generally, Vitamin D3 is associated with the bones. However, in recent years, in clinical settings, people recognise that many patients who have a heart attack will have a deficiency of D3. It doesn't mean that the deficiency caused the heart attack, but it increased the risk of heart attack," said Tadeusz … [Read more...] about Exposure to sunshine is cure to heart problems?
source Shutterstock/vchal Researchers using the genetic-editing technology CRISPR have successfully modified the DNA in cells from Huntington’s disease patients. The feat shows it might be possible to to use CRISPR to treat Huntington’s, which is currently incurable and fatal. CRISPR is a way to edit DNA cheaply and efficiently; researchers think it could transform the ways we treat any sort of genetic condition. But before CRISPR can be used to edit the DNA of living humans, scientists say it needs to be made safer and more efficient. In people with Huntington’s disease, the nerve cells of the brain start to break down over time. The disease is fatal, often within 10 to 30 years, and as of now, there is no cure. But Huntington’s disease is caused by a single genetic mutation– it’s triggered by an inherited gene, making it something … [Read more...] about Scientists just got a step closer to treating incurable diseases using a revolutionary gene-editing tool
Vigorous work-out, at least three times a week, may help people with early-stage Parkinson's disease to reduce the deterioration of motor symptoms, claim researchers.Parkinson's disease (PD) is a long-term degenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS). It mostly affects the motor system. Some of the early symptoms of this disease include shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement, and difficulty with walking. It is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder that causes huge loss of muscle control, trembling, stiffness, slowness and impaired balance.Previously the researchers thought that vigorous physical exercise might be too stressful for PD patients. It is observed that as the disease progresses, the patient became unable to walk, talk and do any kind of simple work. Also read: Early detection of Parkinson's disease is possible: StudyThe study published in the JAMA Neurology revealed that people who involved in physical exercise between 80 to 85 % heart rate might … [Read more...] about Parkinson’s disease: Vigorous exercise might help reducing effects of the neurodegenerative disorder
It is hard to imagine a world without effective drugs to treat infectious disease but that is where we are headed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been sounding the alarm and working hard on the ground with user-friendly messages and infographics for health practitioners and patients alike: Seek professional advice when you’re ill. Don’t take antibiotics for colds. Minimize the exposure of animals to antimicrobials as growth promoters or preventive therapeutics. But without new weapons in our medical tool kits, we are playing with fire. Many of the medical breakthroughs of the last century could be lost through the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Previously treatable infectious diseases like tuberculosis, malaria and pneumonia are poised to overtake cancer and diabetes combined as the world greatest killers, and this is exacerbated by emerging agents of infection, such as Ebola and Zika virus.Drug resistance not only threatens our ability to cure common infectious … [Read more...] about Infectious diseases are poised for a deadly comeback
