Over 3,000 people taken to safer grounds as Philippines braces for strong typhoon
Video PlayerClose MANILA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Over 3,000 residents in the central Philippines have been taken to safer grounds as the Philippines braces for powerful typhoon Kammuri that is expected to lash the archipelago on Monday night. Flights and ferry service have also been suspended in areas that will be directly hit by the typhoon which has slightly intensified on Monday as it heads west at 20 kph. Kummari is forecast to make a landfall in the provinces of Catanduanes and Albay on Monday night or early Tuesday morning. As of Monday morning, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the state weather bureau, said typhoon Kammuri was located 355 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes province, packing sustained winds of up to 150 kilometer per hour and gustiness of up to 185 kph. Video PlayerClose MANILA, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Manila's international airport, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, will be closed for 12 hours starting 11 a.m. on Tuesday due to the threat posed by powerful typhoon Kammuri that is expected to make a landfall on Monday night or early Tuesday morning, airport authorities said on Monday. Ed Monreal, general manager of the Manila international airport authority, said that the airport will be closed from 11 a.m. on Tuesday until 11 p.m. "This is technically force majeure, and for safety of the passengers," Monreal told a news conference. Monreal said a total of 438 flights are going to be affected by the closure. Philippines’ defense chief recommends lifting of martial law in southern Philippines
Video PlayerClose MANILA, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Philippine Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Wednesday he has recommended the lifting of martial law that President Rodrigo Duterte imposed in southern Philippines in 2017 to crush the terrorists with military means. Lorenzana, the administrator of martial law, said his recommendation not to extend martial law when it expires on Dec. 31, 2019 is based on the assessment conducted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. Lorenzana said the recommendation was submitted to the presidential office on Wednesday.
