HELSINKI - U.S. President Donald Trump said after meeting Vladimir Putin on Monday he saw no reason to believe his own intelligence agencies rather than trust the Kremlin leader on the question of whether Russsia interfered to help him win the 2016 election. On a day when he faced pressure from critics, allied countries and even his own staff to take a tough line, Trump said not a single critical word about Moscow on any of the issues that have brought relations between the two powers to the lowest ebb since the Cold War. Instead, he denounced the "stupidity" of his own country's policy, especially the decision to investigate election interference. Trump's performance is likely to create a political storm in the United States, where the White House has struggled for months to dispel a suggestion that Trump was unwilling to stand up to Putin. His performance was denounced as "treasonous" by a former CIA chief and condemned as "shameful" by a Republican senator, although other … [Read more...] about News Shock as Trump backs Putin, blasts ‘foolish, stupid’ U.S.
WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a senior Republican and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, on Monday said President Donald Trump's performance at a press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin will send Moscow a message of U.S. "weakness." Graham, in a Twitter post, said: "Missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections. This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russia as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves." Republican Trump, standing alongside Putin after their summit in Helsinki, said he saw no reason to believe Russia had hacked the 2016 U.S. election to help him win and that Putin "was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today." On Friday, a U.S. special counsel announced indictments of 12 Russian spies on charges of hacking Democratic Party computer networks as part of election interference. "I had to repeat what I have already said many times before -- the Russian state has never interfered and is not planning to interfere in the USA's internal affairs," Putin said. "It is obvious to everyone that bilateral ties are going through a difficult period. However there are no objective reasons for these difficulties, the current tense atmosphere," he said. The US and Russian leaders opened a historic summit in Helsinki on Monday with Donald Trump promising an "extraordinary relationship" and Vladimir Putin saying it was high time to thrash out disputes around the world.
