Telangana’s property registration departments earns Rs 2,000 crore in two months

HYDERABAD : Though Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown badly hit revenue of the state, the registration and stamps (R&S) department is bouncing back. The state government has earned nearly Rs 2,000 crore in just two and half months through property registrations. In January alone, the registration department had earned Rs 950 crore. However, the major revenue-earning department may not achieve its target of Rs 8,000 crore this fiscal. However, due to the lockdown, the registration offices were shut and later also there was no property transactions. Since September, 2020 onwards, the state government had declared registration holiday for nearly two and half months to ensure registration of both agriculture and non-agriculture properties through Dharani portal. The Shabnam that I knew was very different, says adoptive father of death row convict’s son

“The Shabnam that I knew was very different from the one that the world loves to hate.” Usman Saifi makes this statement many times during the conversation. The Bulandshahr-based freelance journalist is the foster father of death row convict Shabnam Ali’s son Taj. Shabnam, along with her lover Saleem, was convicted of killing seven members of her family , including a 10-month-old nephew, in 2008. If executed, she will be the first woman in Independent India to be hanged for a crime. On February 18, Shabnam filed a second mercy petition with the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and the President of India, both of whom have earlier rejected her plea. Around the same time, news spread that preparations were being made at Mathura jail, the only one in the country where female convicts can be hanged. The news of her review petition and Taj’s appeal to spare his mother of the gallows once again turned the focus on the child Taj and Mr. Saifi, who had to plead for privacy from the probing ... » Learn More about The Shabnam that I knew was very different, says adoptive father of death row convict’s son

Water colours

A glass of water has no colour. But a deep sea with the same water is a brilliant blue. Why is this so? This was the question that C.V. Raman asked himself in 1921 on seeing the colour of the Mediterranean sea from a ship. He immediately began to conduct experiments on board the ship using some simple instruments he had with him. At that time, scientists believed the sea was blue because it reflected the colour of the sky, but Raman found that it was the water itself that caused blue light to scatter more than other colours in light. At that time Raman was a professor at the University of Calcutta. He returned from his visit of England and Europe and started experiments to study how light behaved when it passed through various substances. On February 28, 1928, one of the experiments gave a clear result. Light of only one colour was passed through a liquid, but the light that emerged had small traces of another colour. This meant that the molecules in the liquid were changing the ... » Learn More about Water colours

SC upholds death for U.P. teacher, lover

Shabnam, a teacher in Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, whose death sentenced was upheld by the Supreme Court, wanted to do away with her family, who was opposed to her relationship, and keep the family property to herself, the court has confirmed. Quoting the prosecution, the Supreme Court judgment said she strangled her 10-month-old nephew with her own hands. She then lay down, pretending to be unconscious, near her dead father till the neighbours broke into the house. A trial court convicted and sentenced the duo to death in July 2008. The decision was upheld by the Allahabad High Court in April 2013. Rarest of rare crime In its recent judgment on their appeals, a Bench led by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu said the fact that an educated teacher from a civilised family committed this crime and showed no remorse afterwards by itself makes it a “rarest of rare” crime deserving the death penalty. “Such a deed as parricide would be sufficiently appalling were the ... » Learn More about SC upholds death for U.P. teacher, lover
