Massive crowds mark 40th anniversary of Iran revolution
TEHRAN: Iran's president on Monday (Feb 11) insisted "enemy" plots against the country would fail as vast crowds marked 40 years since the Islamic revolution at a time of heightened tensions with the United States."The presence of people today on the streets all over Islamic Iran ... means that the enemy will never reach its evil objectives," a defiant President Hassan Rouhani told those thronging Tehran's Azadi (Freedom) Square, decrying a "conspiracy" involving Washington.Chador-clad women, militia members in camouflage fatigues and ordinary citizens marched through the capital in freezing rain to commemorate the day in February 1979 that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ended millennia of royal rule. The routes leading up to the square were packed with people as loudspeakers blared revolutionary anthems and slogans.Life-size replicas of Iranian-made cruise and ballistic missiles stood in a statement of defiance after the US last year reimposed sanctions following its withdrawal from … [Read more...] about Massive crowds mark 40th anniversary of Iran revolution
New photo book celebrates the 40th anniversary of Canada’s Grand Prix
By Norris McDonald Special to the Star Fri., June 8, 2018 There have only been a few books written about the Grand Prix du Canada, which is taking place this weekend at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Ilse Notre-Dame in Montreal. In his 1970 book, Challenge, the late Len Coates told the story of the first few Grands Prix held at what was then Mosport Park in Ontario and at Le Circuit-Mont Tremblant in Quebec. Prof. David Charters of the University of New Brunswick, in his 2007 book, Our Chequered Past, also took a look back at them. By far the most thorough reporting of the first 16 Canadian Grand Prix races, beginning with the inaugural one in 1967 and continuing through the race in 1983 (there wasn’t one held in 1975) was by Gerald Donaldson in his 1984 book, The Grand Prix of Canada. Now, when I say thorough, I mean thorough. Donaldson’s prose brings the races alive. The photographs — some of them, anyway — are stunning. No fact or figure is … [Read more...] about New photo book celebrates the 40th anniversary of Canada’s Grand Prix

The 2018 Nissan 370Z Nismo Tech shows why the legendary Z car should live on
The 370Z is an aging platform that, despite rumors, isn’t going to be dropped. We got a crack at the 2018 version. Last year, we drove the manual; this year, we drove the automatic. In Nismo performance trim, the car still satisfies. Who knows how much longer Nissan will keep it going? At just over $46,000, the 2017 Nissan 370Z Nismo Tech we recently tested represents an incredible value for the money in sports cars. You just have to get over how boringly excellent it is. I wrote that last year when reviewing the 2017 Nissan 370Z Nismo Tech, and after sampling a $48,510-as-tested 2018 version of the car (You can thank an automatic transmission for the extra cost) I can say that my mind hasn’t changed one bit. As I noted in October 2016, “Z” cars have been around for decades. The very first 240Z, badged as a Datsun, hit the streets in the US in 1969. The whole Z-car idea – affordable, … [Read more...] about The 2018 Nissan 370Z Nismo Tech shows why the legendary Z car should live on
