Volcano victims’ bodies could be recovered from White Island on Friday, New Zealand authorities say
Email Updated December 12, 2019 14:29:09 Map: New Zealand New Zealand authorities say they will try to recover the bodies of volcano victims from White Island on Friday."I can now confirm that we are finalising a plan to recover the bodies from Whakaari/White Island tomorrow morning," Deputy Commissioner John Tims said, adding families would be briefed on the operation. However, volcanic geologist Graham Leonard said the volcano remained in the red zone and was still volatile. "Effectively, the red zone is a no-go for staff and the others need special approval. Police make their own decisions," he said."We have shared our risk assessment shown here with police and these zones are dynamic as the status of the volcano is highly volatile and uncertain and these maps are updated daily."Experts estimate the likelihood of eruption has moved to 50 to 60 per cent in the next 24 hours.More to come.
