PDIC raises P277M from 2019 asset sale
A total of P277 million was raised by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. (PDIC) from selling the assets of closed banks in public biddings last year, the state-run firm reported on Monday. The aggregate amount was 46 percent higher compared to the total 383 properties sold in 2018, it said. The PDIC added the total sale represented 34.9 percent of the total disposal price of assets offered for sale in the public biddings amounting to P792.8 million. These also generated a premium of P69 million over the aggregate minimum disposal price of P208 million for properties offered for sale, it further said. The state deposit insurer said the assets were disposed of via three regional public biddings held in Davao and Cebu City and 10 public biddings held in Manila in 2019 and consisted mostly of residential, commercial, and industrial lots. Some of which have improvements. PDIC emphasized that public biddings are part of its initiative to clean up the big volume of asset ... » Learn More about PDIC raises P277M from 2019 asset sale
Parliament: PMD fires doubled in 2019; some using illegal PMDs again in circuit breaker period
SINGAPORE - The number of fires involving non-compliant personal mobility devices (PMDs) almost doubled from 52 in 2018 to 102 last year, and such fires continue to occur despite multiple measures to arrest the problem. It is also "worrying" that some have started using non-compliant PMDs again during the circuit breaker period, Senior Minister of State for Transport Lam Pin Min wrote in a Facebook post after he introduced two Bills in Parliament on Monday (May 4). The Bills are to bolster the Transport Ministry's ability to tackle these issues, Dr Lam said in the post. The Small Motorised Vehicles Bill will introduce measures like import controls of motorised PMDs and power-assisted bicycles. Its aim is to prevent non-compliant devices from entering Singapore. The Active Mobility (Amendment No. 2) Bill, on the other hand, will extend the coverage of the law to include path-connected open spaces. This will allow the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take action against errant ... » Learn More about Parliament: PMD fires doubled in 2019; some using illegal PMDs again in circuit breaker period
First Chinese coronavirus cases may have been infected in October 2019, says new research
The earliest Covid-19 cases in Hubei province might have emerged as early as October 2019 – weeks before the first known cases – according to new research. A study published in the journal Science last week said these cases would have been difficult to detect and the disease would have established a firm foothold among the human population before it was identified. “It is highly probable that Sars-CoV-2 was circulating in Hubei province at low levels in early November 2019, and possibly as early as October 2019, but not earlier,” the researchers from the University of California San Diego wrote. “By the time Covid-19 was first identified, the virus had firmly established itself in Wuhan. The delay highlights the difficulty in surveillance for novel zoonotic pathogens with high transmissibility and moderate mortality rate.” The study examined ways the coronavirus may have evolved based on publicly available genome sequences and epidemiological simulations. It also explored ... » Learn More about First Chinese coronavirus cases may have been infected in October 2019, says new research
LOOK: 5 major smartphone innovations in 2019
The Samsung Galaxy Fold. Image: courtesy of Samsung via AFP Relaxnews In the wake of a decade in which the form factor of smartphones has not changed much, 2019 marks a turning point. What with handsets equipped with folding or bezel-less screens, or without any visible camera, innovation can now be seen at first glance. It is worth noting that virtually all of these breakthroughs were achieved by Chinese manufacturers. Folding screens The Huawei Mate X. Image: courtesy of Huawei via AFP Relaxnews This is obviously the most significant innovation of the year. With great pomp and circumstance, both Samsung and Huawei presented models with revolutionary flexible screens early in the year. The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a screen that opens like a book to offer a diagonal of 7.3 inches, but with a relatively small display of 4.6 inches when folded. In contrast, the Huawei Mate X is distinguished by a big 8-inch screen on the exterior rather than the interior of the device. ... » Learn More about LOOK: 5 major smartphone innovations in 2019

Police to question Thanathorn’s brother over role in 2019 bribery case
The younger brother of politician Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit has been summonsed to face police over his role in a bribery case in which 2 people were jailed last year. In November 2019, Prasit Aphaiphoncharn, from the Crown Property Bureau, and Surakit Tangwithoowanich, were both sentenced to 3 years in jail for taking bribes from Sakulthorn Juangroongruangkit and forging documents as part of a land deal. Although Sakulthorn’s named was mentioned in the court proceedings, he was never charged. The Bangkok Post reports that the deal centred around 12 rai of land in Chidlom, one of the most exclusive districts in central Bangkok. Sakulthorn, the boss of Real Asset Development, was in talks with Prasit and Surakit, who told him they could help him skip the land-leasing process of the CPB in return for 20 million baht. The Criminal Court subsequently revealed that Sakulthorn parted with money on 3 occasions, with both men found guilty of forging documents in an effort to trick him ... » Learn More about Police to question Thanathorn’s brother over role in 2019 bribery case
Conventional crimes down due to police roadblocks to curb Covid-19, says IGP
KUALA LUMPUR: The deployment of police personnel for Covid-19 duties since March 18 last year has also led to other crime trends, says Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador. The Inspector-General of Police said the presence of tens of thousands of police personnel on Covid-19 duty nationwide had intimidated criminals. "The setting up of hundreds of roadblocks also make it hard for criminals to move freely. "Such positive impact has led to the reduction of conventional crimes but non-conventional ones have gone up. "Incest cases, child pornography, cyber bullying, online scam and suicide are among the non-conventional crimes. It is hard to curb as most of the victims feel ashamed or are afraid to lodge a report," he said during the 214th Police Day celebrations on Thursday (March 25). The event was officiated by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. ... » Learn More about Conventional crimes down due to police roadblocks to curb Covid-19, says IGP
Cycling: OCBC Cycle 2019 is first recipient of Singapore Environment Council’s Eco Event certification
SINGAPORE - The OCBC Cycle 2019 is the first event here to earn the Singapore Environment Council's (SEC) Eco Event certification, OCBC announced on Wednesday (June 19). The green label recognises events in Singapore that take steps to use less and green more, benchmarked against a set of stringent environment compliance guidelines. OCBC Bank had committed to plant one tree for every 50 cyclists who registered for the May 10-12 OCBC Cycle, and a total of 140 trees were planted on June 1 at Dairy Farm Nature Park. OCBC Bank's head of group brand and communications Koh Ching Ching said the decision to reduce the carbon footprint at this year's OCBC Cycle stems from the organisation's commitment to be environmentally responsible. She added: "It was encouraging to receive approval and positive feedback from many participants; they welcomed the move to drop single-use plastics and understood the importance of sustainability. "We hope that more event organisers and the community ... » Learn More about Cycling: OCBC Cycle 2019 is first recipient of Singapore Environment Council’s Eco Event certification
