LONDON: Asian and black voters are likely to decide the outcome of Britain's next general election in 2015, according to a new study. The study by cross-party group Operation Black Vote (OBV), which campaigns for a fairer vote across various communities in Britain, found the number of seats where ethnic minority voters could decide the outcome had rocketed by 70 per cent compared to the 2010 election. "The black vote has never been so powerful. This is great news for all those who thought we could never effect change," OBV spokesperson Simon Woolley said. "With this political leverage I'm sure many will want to demand greater race equality. This research is a political game-changer - above all, if ethnic minority communities and politicians respond positively to it, democracy wins," he added. The OBV study suggests that the ethnic minority vote is bigger than the majority of the sitting MP in 168 marginal seats. In 2001, the census showed Britain's ethnic minority population was 7 … [Read more...] about Asians could swing next UK general elections: Study

Women taking birth control pill likely to have smaller key brain region responsible for sex drive, mood change. Here’s why
A new study by researchers studying the brain found that women taking oral contraceptives, commonly known as birth control pills, has significantly smaller hypothalamus volume, compared to women not taking the pill.Located at the base of the brain above the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus produces hormones and helps regulate essential bodily functions including body temperature, mood, appetite, sex drive, sleep cycles, and heart rate. The study was presented at the 105th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America-RSNA 2019.Structural effects of sex hormones, including oral contraceptive pills, on the human hypothalamus, have never been reported, according to the researchers. This may be in part because validated methods to quantitatively analyze MRI exams of the hypothalamus have not been available.Michael L. Metro Man wants to change how we shop
'The best way to make an impact in this market is by focusing on three things: Unmet customer need, unarticulated customer need, and emerging customer need,' Metro's Arvind Mediratta tells Sangeeta Tanwar and Alokananda Chakraborty.Rediff.com When we go back and listen to the recording of our conversation with Arvind Mediratta, we can hear ourselves launching into loud guffaws every now and then; quite often we are trying to stop the laugh short because we are not sure if an episode he has just narrated is entirely true or if he is just pulling a fast one. Take his response to this question about whether he believes an average Indian can intellectually corner the American or the European in a flash. He says when he landed up in the US during an earlier assignment -- and that would be barely five years ago -- one of the questions he was often asked by colleagues was how many elephants do Indians keep in their homes. We laugh and then stop and wonder if he is really serious. The MD & … [Read more...] about Metro Man wants to change how we shop
Despite increase in bird-watchers in India, guidance still produced by overseas experts
With number of active bird-watchers increasing annually in India, the question remains why country’s enlightened folks are forced to remain dependent upon books and field guides produced by overseas experts?A related question is raised to the domestic ornithological organisations undertaking avian studies having not come up with texts comparable to those available in overseas markets, on Indian bird species.Such probing issues are being raised by both forest department’s officials, who administer all conservation reserves in the country, and yet are described as not being able to identify birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians etc. Also by wildlife experts who trek such reserves to explore more and receive almost nothing in return from foresters in lieu of their entry fee paid by each one of them.Loud and clear, there is a shortage of published stuff on Indian species -- nearly 450 mammals, and only Tiger or Leopard or Lion receiving … [Read more...] about Despite increase in bird-watchers in India, guidance still produced by overseas experts
