IIT Madras Researchers identify a Sustainable, High-Yielding Alternative Source for Anti-Cancer Drug Camptothecin
CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Researchers have identified a sustainable and high-yielding alternative source for the anti-cancer drug Camptothecin . This novel microbial fermentation process can be an economically-efficient method of production to fulfill the market demand at a large scale. Topotecan and Irinotecan are two widely used anticancer drugs, which are produced by using Camptothecin as the lead molecule. More than a dozen derivatives and conjugates of Camptothecin are under various stages of clinical trials for anti-cancer applications. Camptothecin is an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata and the Indian tree Nothapodytes nimmoniana. Nearly 1,000 tons of plant material is required to extract just one ton of Camptothecin. Due to extensive overharvesting to meet the market demand both these plants are now critically endangered. The N. nimmoniana population has seen more than a 20% decline in the last decade alone. Moreover, India had its own important geopolitical reasons to develop ties with the military regime. More than 40 U.S. Embassy cables classified from New Delhi and Yangon, spread over the period from 2003 to 2009 and accessed by The Hindu through WikiLeaks, confirm the reality that in diplomacy, national ideals are no competition to that thing called “strategic interest.” India had no problem dumping old friend Aung San Suu Kyi (‘ASSK') to romance Myanmar's generals. The cables reflect U.S. frustration over the ... » Learn More about ‘Maybe Myanmar is our Pakistan’
Sensex marks first gain of 2018, rebounds 176 points
Benchmark Sensex reversed a three- session slide to end at 33,970 after the government moved forward on its bank recapitalisation programme. Investors also took heart from upbeat macro indicators and firm global cues, brokers said. The finance ministry today sought Parliament’s nod for extra expenditure of Rs 80,000 crore towards recapitalisation of bad loans-saddled public sector banks through bonds. State-run lenders made handsome gains in today’s session. Index heavyweight SBI rose 1.72 per cent, while UCO Bank, IDBI, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Oriental Bank of Commerce, among others, rallied by up to 8.50 per cent. Market sentiment was bolstered after a monthly survey showed the Indian services sector returned to marginal growth in December as new orders broadly stabilised. The BSE benchmark Sensex opened higher at 33,912.49 and hovered in a range of 33,995.40 to 33,802.13 before finishing at 33,969.64, showing a gain of 176.26 points or ... » Learn More about Sensex marks first gain of 2018, rebounds 176 points
