Pope Francis picks Filipino as Los Angeles bishop Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) - March 8, 2019 - 12:00am MANILA, Philippines — Pope Francis appointed on Tuesday Monsignor Alejandro Aclan of Pasay City as the newest auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said the appointment of Aclan makes him the second Filipino-American bishop in the United States. Aclan, 68, graduated with a degree in medical technology from the University of Santo Tomas before he and his family migrated to Southern California in 1982. The bishop-elect was born on Feb. 9, 1951 in Pasay City. He is the third of eight children. In 1988, he pursued the vocation to the priesthood at St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo and was ordained priest in Los Angeles after five years. For many years, Highland Park in Los Angeles was a relatively unknown and quiet residential part of town.
