When ‘Jana Gana Mana’ got its tune
It is common knowledge that Rabindranath Tagore authored the national anthem ‘Jana Gana Mana’ in 1911. But, not many know that it was translated into English as ‘Morning Song of India’ and given a tune on February 28, 1919 during Tagore’s brief stay at Madanapalle. Then a nondescript town, Madanapalle got a coveted place in history as Tagore chose to stay with Irish poet James H. Cousins, then principal of Besant Theosophical College. Till then, ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was just a lyric. It became a song after the principal’s wife Margaret Cousins gave it a tune. She had carefully studied the meaning of each line and composed the musical notes, which Tagore had happily approved. Before ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was declared the national anthem on January 24, 1950, two days before India became a republic, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had asked musician Herbert Murrill to give his opinion on the tune. Original document sold “Murrill had felt it was a bit slow. He had increased the tempo ... » Learn More about When ‘Jana Gana Mana’ got its tune
World Insights: More Southeast Asian nations embrace Chinese vaccines to fight COVID-19
Video Player Close BANGKOK, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- When a plane carrying Thailand's first batch of COVID-19 vaccines from China's Sinovac landed at an airport here on Wednesday, people waiting on the tarmac cheered and applauded. "Thank you to the People's Republic of China for delivering the first batch of vaccines this month and the following batches in the subsequent months," said Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, when he welcomed the vaccines' arrival at the airport. Prayut expressed his gratitude while a refrigerated container, with a banner reading "COVID-19 vaccines, returning smiles to Thailand" written in Thai, was lowered from the plane. The Chinese vaccines would be distributed to 13 provinces of Thailand to prioritize health care workers and those most at risk, while more vaccine shipments are expected to arrive in March and April. Thailand, known as the Land of Smiles, is heavily reliant on tourism but it recently has seen a drop in tourism due to ... » Learn More about World Insights: More Southeast Asian nations embrace Chinese vaccines to fight COVID-19
Western Sydney Aerotropolis land values are soaring, but not everyone is able to cash in

A few strands of wire is all that separates Peter Srzich from millions of dollars. His 2 hectare property has a house, some sheds and a few pigs and goats. It is directly opposite the $5.3 billion Western Sydney airport, due to open at Badgerys Creek in 2026. Holiday’s blockbusters nurture cinematic revival
The Mid-Autumn and National Day holidays-the first weeklong break since nearly 70,000 screens were reopened on July 20-have shown a strong recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown despite seating capacity limits of 75 percent. Boosted by two new blockbusters, My People, My Homeland and Jiang Ziya: Legend of Deification , the vacation saw box office results of around 2.94 billion yuan ($433.1 million) as of Monday, close to the same period last year and twice as much as in the time period in 2018, according to movie information tracker Beacon. Coupled with earlier hits-including the war epic The Eight Hundred , the highest-grossing film this year, and Leap with actress Gong Li, China saw total movie ticket revenues surpass 10 billion yuan by Oct 3. It was another sign of the potential of the world's second-largest movie market in terms of box office. Axar effortlessly fills Jadeja void in India’s spin attack
IMAGE: Axar Patel credits close friends, family for helping him tackle tough phase while out of India squad. Photograph: BCCI Ravindra Jadeja has had little competition for his spot as India's preferred spin all-rounder over the last seven years but that may have changed following Axar Patel's match-winning display in the third Test against England in Ahmedabad. With Jadeja recovering from a thumb injury, Patel was called up to assist spin spearhead Ravichandran Ashwin in the four-Test series against Joe Root's men. Patel missed the series opener with a knee injury but impressed in the second match, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in his debut Test in Chennai. The 27-year-old followed that with a match haul of 11-70 on a dustbowl in Ahmedabad where India triumphed inside two days in the pink-ball Test on Thursday. India captain Virat Kohli said Patel had filled in seamlessly for 'Jaddu'. Serena Williams tops Halep at Australian Open quarterfinal
As well as she played at the start of her Australian Open quarterfinal, Serena Williams suddenly was struggling early in the second set. After one mistake against No. 2 seed Simona Halep — who won the last time they played each other — Williams pointed at her racket strings and made a sour face, as if to make clear it wasn't truly her own fault. After another, Williams looked up at her guest box with palms up and asked, “What is happening?” That dismay did not last long. Williams claimed the last five games and beat Halep 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to return to the final four at Melbourne Park for the first time since she won the tournament in 2017. Seeking a record-tying 24th Grand Slam title, Williams set up a showdown against No. 3 Naomi Osaka, who will carry a 19-match winning streak into Thursday's semifinals. “She's Serena,” Osaka said. “I feel really intimidated when I see her on the other side of the court.” This will be their fourth career matchup — all on hard courts — and ... » Learn More about Serena Williams tops Halep at Australian Open quarterfinal
President’s Busan Trip Is Blatant Electioneering
February 26, 2021 13:14 President Moon Jae-in visited Busan for the first time this year to be briefed on the development of a so-called mega-city project there. But it does not take a genius to figure out that he went there to drum up voter support ahead of the mayoral by-election in April, bypassing the awkward constitutional requirement for the president to stay above the political fray. Moon was duly briefed on the progress of a new airport on Gadeok Island in Busan and boasted that it will become a "global logistics hub." Yet plans the government drew up to build a new airport in Gimhae near Busan have not even been scrapped, and no laws have been passed to authorize the Gadeok airport. The president was blatantly soliciting votes in exchange for building an airport. It has become clear that asking Moon to abide by any regulations is now meaningless. Moon was accompanied by a huge entourage -- the ministers of finance, interior and safety, land, infrastructure and ... » Learn More about President’s Busan Trip Is Blatant Electioneering
