BANGKOK: Struggling national carrier Thai Airways International PCL is pinning hopes of a revival to its 1990s heyday on a new leadership team, jet purchases and improving its brand as tourism booms in the region. But the new president and chairman taking the helm are political appointees without aviation experience and several executives told Reuters the airline needs to adjust to a market where the good times of having a near-monopoly at home are long over.Challenges for the new team include cutting costs, managing a mixed fleet, coping with loss-making subsidiaries as well as healing long-time rifts between government-appointed management and airline veterans.Thailand has been the beneficiary of a boom in tourist arrivals, particularly from China, but as foreign airlines like Qatar Airways and China Eastern Airlines Corp have rushed to add flights, Thai Airways has reported annual losses for four of the last five years."Thai Airways did not adapt quickly enough and competes in … [Read more...] about Headwinds before takeoff for new Thai Airways team

Passengers intending to fly business class on Thai Airways’ new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft will have to first pass the waist test (that’s ‘waist’ not ‘waste’!). Flight Lieutenant Pratthana Pattanasirim, THAI’s director of security and flight standard division, says that a passenger with waist bigger than 56 inches (142 cm) cannot fly business class on the fleet’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft. He explained that the business class seats have been installed with new safety belts and an airbag system by the manufacturer in accordance with the safety standards of the US Federal Aviation Administration. He claims the safety belt cannot accommodate a passenger whose waist is larger than 56 inches. Pratthana said the new safety-belt system cannot accommodate a parent with a child sitting on his or her lap hence parents travelling with young children also cannot fly business class on the airline’s Dreamliner aircraft. THAI received the two … [Read more...] about Fatties in Thai Business Class? Mai dai!

The national carrier has limited waist sizes for passengers and banned carrying infants on laps in business class on the aircraft. photo by THAI Thai Airways International (THAI) has defended its move to ban people with a waistline of over 56 inches (142cm) from buying business class seats on its two Boeing 787-9 aircraft, saying the decision is purely based on safety considerations arising from the installation of new seat belt airbags. The national carrier added the two Boeing Dreamliners to its fleet in September last year and the aircraft manufacturer has now installed a new airbag system on seat belts for business class seats. This means that passengers with a waistline of over 56 inches are not able to fasten the straps, which is a requirement of US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards, Flt Lt Prathana Pattanasiri, vice president of THAI's aviation safety, security and standards … [Read more...] about THAI defends bulging waistline ban on Dreamliners
Thai Airways International added two Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners to its fleet in September last year. (Bangkok Post file photo) Thai Airways International (THAI) says the limit on waist sizes for passengers, and ban on carrying infants on laps, in business class on its two Boeing 787-9 aircraft is a consequence of the installation of seat belt airbags for safety. The national carrier added the two Boeing Dreamliners to its fleet in September last year and the aircraft manufacturer had installed new airbags on seatbelts for business class seats. This meant that passengers with a waistline of over 56 inches (142.24cms) could not fasten these new seatbelt airbags, which meet US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety standards, Flt Lt Prathana Pattanasiri, vice president of THAI’s aviation safety, security and standards department said on Friday. Passengers in those seats also could not carry infants on their laps. This type of seatbelt could not be extended because of the … [Read more...] about THAI cites safety for waistline rule on Dreamliners
