GuwahatiA truck driver died in central Assam’s Sonitpur district on Saturday after rampaging protesters set his vehicle on fire as Assam’s chief minister appealed for calm to contain violent clashes that have roiled the north-east over changes to India’s citizenship laws.The empty oil tanker was on its way from Sipajhar in Udalguri district when it was set ablaze by protesters at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur on Friday night, police said. An autorickshaw driver was killed and another man sustained injuries when the three-wheeler hit a truck in outer Delhi’s Narela in the early hours of Saturday, the police said.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Gaurav Sharma said that the deceased has been identified as Ratibhan Singh, who lived in Ashok Nagar, and the injured as Budhpal, a resident of Ashok Vihar Phase-II.The police said that they received a call at 4.22 a.m. regarding an accident near Narela red light towards Sonepat. When a police team reached the spot, they found an autorickshaw in accidental condition. TRICHY: A 48-year-old woman pillion passenger was killed in a road accident at Gundoor village on Trichy-Pudukkottai National Highway near Trichy international airport on Sunday. Police sources said that the accident was a head-on collision involving the two-wheeler and a truck, while local villagers blamed the poor illumination on the stretch as the cause for the tragedy. Police identified the deceased as R Mallika, 48, a native of Kalamavur in Pudukkottai district. The victim along with her son Sathish, 22, was heading to Lalgudi to participate in a family function. While approaching the police check post at Gundoor near Trichy airport around 5 am, a truck approaching from the opposite direction hit the two-wheeler head-on killing Mallika on the spot. Sathish survived the accident with minor injuries, police said. The 15-day leeway that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had sought for implementation of FASTag has not been of much help, as toll plazas around Delhi continue to face a crunch in FASTag stickers, even as users remain confused about issues like recharge and payment.In a move aimed to reduce bottlenecks at national highways, the Centre had mandated that all lanes of national highways toll plazas to be declared as FASTag lanes by December 15, 2019. On Saturday, the Centre relaxed its rules for the rollout of the mandatory FASTag mechanism of paying at national highways, allowing more collection centres to accept cash payments instead of the previous directive that limited it to one.
