MUMBAI: The death toll in Delhi’s violence that started Sunday over the controversial citizenship legislation has risen to seven, including a cop, even as those injured continue to get treatment in various hospitals, said media reports on Tuesday. A senior Delhi Police official of the rank “deputy commissioner” was among the six cops who were seriously injured in the clashes. Media reports said that around 75 people were injured in Monday’s clashes. While the cop died of head injuries due to stone pelting, doctors were quoted as saying that the four civilians who died had “gunshot injuries.” Intense violence had erupted in north-east parts of the Indian capital, when clashes broke out between the supporters of the “Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)” and those opposed to it. The violence hit areas, in particular, were Maujpur, Jafrabad, Bhajanpura, Karawalnagar and Babarpur. One petrol station was set on fire by the protesters. India antitrust body says Reuters story corroborates evidence in probe of Amazon
NEW DELHI: India's antitrust body on Friday told a court that a Reuters report showing Amazon.com Inc gave preferential treatment to a small group of sellers on its India platform corroborated evidence it had received and which had triggered an investigation of the U.S. e-commerce giant. The Competition Commission of India (CCI) announced in January 2020 that it was investigating Amazon and Walmart Inc's Flipkart following a complaint from a trader group that they were promoting preferred sellers. But the probe into alleged violations of competition law was put on hold as the two firms mounted a court challenge. While arguing on Friday for restarting the probe, Madhavi Goradia Divan, an Additional Solicitor General of India representing the CCI, read parts of the Reuters report to the judge in the Karnataka High Court, saying it "corroborates what was said" in the original complaint. The Reuters story, which was published last month, was based on internal Amazon documents ... » Learn More about India antitrust body says Reuters story corroborates evidence in probe of Amazon
Second COVID-19 surge grips India on first anniversary of lockdown
NEW DELHI: India reported 46,951 new COVID-19 infections on Monday (Mar 22), the highest since early November. It also reported 212 new COVID-19 deaths on Monday, the most since early January. A year ago, India had observed what Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a people's curfew, marking the start of a chaotic nationwide lockdown in a bid to contain the virus. Total deaths have now swelled to 159,967 and infections to 11.65 million, the highest in the world after the United States and Brazil. Maharashtra, India's most industrialised state and home to its financial capital Mumbai, has been accounting for more than 60 per cent of the country's total cases after a full-scale reopening of its economy unleashed a second wave of infections late last month. The state reported 30,535 new coronavirus infections and 99 COVID-19 deaths in the past 24 hours. India reports new COVID-19 virus variant, daily deaths at year’s high
NEW DELHI: India has detected a new "double mutant variant" of the coronavirus, the health ministry said on Wednesday (Mar 24), adding to concern as the government struggles with the highest single-day tally of new infections and deaths this year. Genome sequencing and analysis of samples from Maharashtra state found mutations in the virus that do not match previously catalogued "variants of concern", the ministry said in a statement. Maharashtra is one of India's worst-affected states but the ministry said it was not clear if the new variant was causing an upsurge there or in other states. READ: Second COVID-19 surge grips India on first anniversary of lockdown "Though (variants of concern) and a new double mutant variant have been found in India, these have not been detected in numbers sufficient to either establish a direct relationship or explain the rapid increase in cases in some states," the ministry said in a statement. It did not elaborate. India has already ... » Learn More about India reports new COVID-19 virus variant, daily deaths at year’s high
India likely to delay COVAX vaccine supplies for March, April, says UNICEF
NEW DELHI: India will likely delay deliveries of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses to the COVAX facility backed by GAVI and the World Health Organization (WHO) for March and April, the programme's procurement and distributing partner UNICEF told Reuters early on Thursday (Mar 25). "We understand that deliveries of COVID-19 vaccines to lower-income economies participating in the COVAX facility will likely face delays following a setback in securing export licenses for further doses of COVID-19 vaccines produced by the Serum Institute of India (SII), expected to be shipped in March and April," UNICEF said in an email. "COVAX is in talks with the government of India with a view to ensuring deliveries as quickly as possible." Deadlier Covid variant detected in India
NEW DELHI: India’s federal health ministry said a new and deadlier “double mutant variant” of Covid-19 has been detected in more than a dozen states across the country, in addition to many other strains or variants of concern (VOCs) that have also been found abroad. “Though VOCs and a new double mutant variant have been found in India, these have not been detected in numbers sufficient to either establish or direct relationship or explain the rapid increase in cases in some states. Genomic sequencing and epidemiological studies are continuing to further analyze the situation,” a statement released by the federal health ministry said. So far, 771 VOCs have been detected in 10,787 positive samples shared by the states, including the variants first detected in Britain, South Africa and Brazil respectively, said the ministry. “Genome sequencing and analysis have been carried out on samples from arriving international travellers, contacts of those positive for VOC and community ... » Learn More about Deadlier Covid variant detected in India
Delhi businessman ‘inspired’ by Saddam Hussein poisons in-laws, wife with thallium
Devender Mohan Sharma, 65, is a crushed man. He has lost most of his family over the past two months; his wife Anita, 62, died on Jan 31, while his daughter Priyanka, 27, followed soon after. His other daughter, Divya, 35, fell into a coma last month and is now on a ventilator. New Delhi police believe the person responsible is Divya’s husband, Varun Arora. The 38-year-old builder has been charged with murder and attempted murder after being “inspired” by Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s method for eliminating his rivals. Investigations of Arora’s laptop revealed that he had searched for “how to kill someone slowly”, and had open links to stories on how Hussein’s henchmen used the highly toxic chemical thallium sulphate to poison people because it worked slowly but lethally. Thallium – which has no odour or taste – is as deadly as mercury, lead and arsenic. Apart from Hussein, Russia’s KGB is also suspected to have used it on enemies of the state. “We think he had been poisoning ... » Learn More about Delhi businessman ‘inspired’ by Saddam Hussein poisons in-laws, wife with thallium
India records highest daily number of COVID-19 infections in five months
NEW DELHI: India reported the highest daily increase in coronavirus cases in five months on Monday (Mar 29), with the second wave of the disease driven by surging infections in the country's richest state Maharastra. A total of 68,020 new coronavirus cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said. It was the highest daily rise since Oct 11, according to a Reuters tally. India has been reporting a spike in cases - above the 60,000 mark - for three consecutive days, though Monday's rise was still below September's peak of more than 90,000 cases a day. The total number of cases since the epidemic began a year ago crossed the 12 million mark, making India the hardest hit country outside the United States and Brazil. Some experts believe the truer figure would be more than 300 million due to insufficient testing, though that has improved. Daily deaths rose by 291 on Monday and the virus has so far killed 161,843 people in India. India’s new daily COVID-19 cases surpass 100,000 for first time
NEW DELHI: India reported a record rise in COVID-19 infections on Monday (Apr 5), becoming only the second country after the United States to register more than 100,000 new cases in a day, as hospitals in its worst affected state are overrun by patients. The country's daily infections have leapt about 12-fold since hitting a multi-month low in early February, when authorities eased most restrictions and people largely stopped wearing masks and following social distancing. More infectious variants of the virus may have also played a role in the second surge, some epidemiologists said. With 103,558 new infections, India has now reported 12.6 million cases, the highest after the United States and Brazil, data from the health ministry showed.
