CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.: Nearly two weeks after a fiery explosion during a ground test of its new crew capsule, SpaceX confirmed on Friday that the vehicle was destroyed, but neither the company nor NASA, its primary customer, have publicly acknowledged the nature of the mishap.Instead, Hans Koenigsmann, vice president of flight reliability for California-based Space Exploration Technologies Corp, known as SpaceX, continued to refer to the accident simply as an "anomaly" - science jargon for when something goes wrong. The April 20 accident occurred on a launch pad at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station as SpaceX was conducting a test of emergency thrusters designed to propel the capsule, dubbed Crew Dragon, to safety from atop the rocket in the event of a launch failure. An attempt to test-fire the eight SuperDraco engines triggered the accident, demolishing the entire vehicle on a test stand, Koenigsmann told reporters at NASA's Kennedy Space Center."Just prior, before we wanted to fire … [Read more...] about SpaceX confirms crew capsule destroyed in April test accident
Two people were killed and 12 injured on Wednesday after falling off a slide at a theme park in southwest China. The accident happened at the Children's Garden attraction in Taiping, Sichuan province, on the first day of the Labour Day holiday, the town government said in a statement on social media. The park had been closed and "the person responsible for the business" had been detained pending an investigation, it said. The statement did not provide details of the people killed, except to say they were both adults. Of the 12 people hurt, six were adults and six children, it said, adding they were being treated in hospital. A woman who was at the park with her daughter when the accident happened said she thought the ride might have been overcrowded. "I was on a rope bridge and saw four or five rubber lifebuoys with people on them all crowded together and sliding down," the woman, who declined to give her name, said in an interview. "The people were screaming, I'm not sure whether from … [Read more...] about Two killed, 12 hurt in Chinese theme park slide accident

The blame is often placed on weak rule of law along with even weaker enforcement of that law. Instead of relying on these ineffectual remedies, why not turn to an undoubted strong point of Thai society – its hierarchical system. Thai hierarchy produces a visible ranking of seniority through certain obvious markers. Seniority in students, for example, is marked by the uniforms they wear from kindergarten level up to university. Given the number of universities spread across the country, why not use the “social side effects” of university student seniority to set an example of compulsory helmet use for all children, down to kindergarten toddlers (or at least their carers)? Thai society is rapidly ageing and cannot afford the rising number of road casualties it is suffering every year. Through such “noblesse oblige”, our cream of the educational crop could expand their aura as role models by always wearing helmets on bikes. Last year … [Read more...] about Law enforcement has failed to curb horrific bike-accident toll
