US military action not a good omen: China Daily editorial
The US strike in eastern Syria on Friday shows the new US administration under Joe Biden, for all its stated willingness to amend its predecessor's foreign policy woes, has no intention of changing the US policy in the Middle East. This is certainly not good news for either the region or the world at large. In what was intended, and widely perceived to be a strike with limited scope and time frame, the United States struck the positions of Iran-backed militia groups in Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour near the Iraqi border, killing 22 fighters. The US claimed it was responding to the recent rocket attacks launched by the militia groups on US forces in the region. But the strike serves multiple purposes, not least sending the message that the US is willing to again flex its military muscles to advance its interests in international settings. Being locked in a proxy war in Syria, the US throwing its weight behind the rebels which are in a defensive position against the ... » Learn More about US military action not a good omen: China Daily editorial
U.S. readies $40 bln in loans to boost clean energy -official
WASHINGTON : U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Wednesday she is ready to reactivate her department's loan program office that went mostly unused in the last four years and has more than $40 billion in funds to boost the transition to clean energy. "I am ready to rev those engines back up so that we can spur the next generation of innovation and deployment," Granholm said during the virtually-held CERAWeek conference. She did not offer details on when the loans would be offered. Granholm said Jigar Shah, an expert in clean energy finance, will head the department's loan programs office. Shah was most recently co-founder and president of Generate Capital, were he helped entrepreneurs speed decarbonization. He also founded SunEdison, a solar energy financing company . Xiplomacy: Xi on China’s pursuit of high-quality development
Video Player Close BEIJING, March 4 (Xinhua) -- China's development has been advancing in a new historic journey since late 2017, when Chinese President Xi Jinping noted at the 19th Communist Party of China (CPC) National Congress that China's economy was transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development. To forestall and defuse various kinds of risks and proactively address challenges brought by external changes, China needs to focus on taking care of its own matters and improving the quality of development, Xi has said. It is widely believed that this new vision for development, featuring innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development, benefits not only China, but the world as a whole. "China will work with other countries to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security and common prosperity," Xi said in his speech at World Economic Forum Virtual Event of the Davos Agenda in ... » Learn More about Xiplomacy: Xi on China’s pursuit of high-quality development
OPEC+ debates whether to raise or freeze oil output as price recovers
DUBAI/MOSCOW: OPEC and its allies in will decide on Thursday whether to freeze oil output or raise it slightly from April as a recent price rally is clouded by concern over the fragility of economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic. The market has been expecting the OPEC+ group of producers to ease supply cuts by about 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) from April. OPEC's de facto leader Saudi Arabia has also been expected to partially or fully end its voluntary production cut of an additional 1 million bpd. But three OPEC+ sources said on Wednesday that some key members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) had suggested that output across the OPEC+ group should be kept unchanged. It was not immediately clear whether Saudi Arabia would end its voluntary cuts or extend them, they said. Russia has been insisting on raising output to avoid prices spiking any further and lending support to shale oil output from the United States , which is not ... » Learn More about OPEC+ debates whether to raise or freeze oil output as price recovers
How the BJP has outwitted the Congress
There are two national political parties in India, but only one of them seems to be any good at politics, says Mihir S Sharma. T he Bharatiya Janata Party seems to be playing in a completely different league than the Congress. The BJP is in the Premiership, while the Congress is playing in the fourth division, with the air of a team in danger of further relegation. Consider the whole 'nationalism' thing. Remember how the BJP's assault on speech in campuses first hit the headlines? With the tragic death of Rohith Vemula. That, for the BJP, was politically disastrous: Aspirational young Dalit men were precisely whom they had to woo over if Hindutva was to grow, and Uttar Pradesh -- for example -- was to be won. How has it ended? With Kanhaiya Kumar as a focus of mockery and disdain for large parts of the middle class, while the human resource development ministry can go right on making India's university campuses safe for the ABVP, and only the ABVP. This reframing of the ... » Learn More about How the BJP has outwitted the Congress
