Scottish distillery looks to history to boost spirits
CRIEFF, United Kingdom-It has survived world wars, Prohibition and the Great Depression but this may very well be the toughest time yet for Scotland's oldest whisky maker. The Glenturret Distillery, located on the banks of the River Turret 3.2 kilometers northwest of the town of Crieff, was established in 1763 and is a popular stop for whisky enthusiasts. Apart from the rushing river and a distiller rolling oak barrels into a filling house, The Glenturret, which closed to visitors during the COVID-19 lockdown, is eerily quiet. Travel restrictions that came with the pandemic have caused sales to fall at the distillery, in pubs and restaurants, and at airport duty-free shops. But it is a 25 percent tariff imposed by the United States in October 2019 and a slowdown in exports to Europe after the end of the Brexit transition that is hitting profits the hardest. "It has been a really tough period for us with COVID, US tariffs and Brexit as well," said the distillery's managing ... » Learn More about Scottish distillery looks to history to boost spirits
Belt and Road boost sustainable development
Recently, media commentary emerging from European countries suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sharp reduction of Chinese investment in economies participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. Some people continue to express concern over a perceived debt issue, while others sought to highlight that coal-fired power plants are being built under the BRI framework. To be sure, there are others who have taken cognizance of the new economic development opportunities that the BRI would present now as well as in the future, once the dust of the pandemic settles. A dispassionate overview of the topic, therefore, would be necessary to gain a proper perspective. No debt trap for participants In 2020, China's non-financial direct investment in the countries along the Belt and Road reached $17.79 billion, up more than 18 percent year-on-year. From 2014 to 2020, China's non-financial direct investment into the countries along the Belt and Road reached $104.72 billion, ... » Learn More about Belt and Road boost sustainable development

Reviving the Iran deal: On Biden attempt to revive JCPOA
U.S. President Joe Biden’s attempts to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran nuclear deal , have not seen any breakthrough with both sides waiting for the other to blink. The Biden administration says it would return to the deal if Iran starts complying with its terms. Tehran, on the other side, asks the U.S., which unilaterally quit the deal under the Donald Trump administration in May 2018, to return to the agreement first and lift sanctions on Iran. The EU’s efforts to organise direct U.S.-Iran talks were also unsuccessful as Tehran reportedly rejected the offer. Iran has also accelerated its nuclear programme. This game of chicken continues as the clock is ticking. Iran will elect a new President in June. Hassan Rouhani, who bet his presidency on the deal — only to be repudiated by Mr. Trump — cannot stand in a third consecutive election. There is no guarantee that a moderate like Mr. Rouhani would be elected this time. And it is not a ... » Learn More about Reviving the Iran deal: On Biden attempt to revive JCPOA
Ranjith not to enter the fray
Barely a day after he had expressed willingness to contest on the CPI(M) ticket from Kozhikode North segment, filmmaker Ranjith has backed out from entering the fray for the coming Assembly polls. He told the media that he wholeheartedly supported incumbent legislator A. Pradeepkumar, who would be running for the fourth time in a row from the segment. The CPI(M) district secretariat, which met here on Wednesday, favoured the candidature of Mr. Pradeepkumar. Party sources said that a section of leaders was against the renomination of Mr. Pradeepkumar. Speculations were rife over the party fielding Mr. Ranjith as Mr. Pradeepkumar completed three consecutive terms. Incidentally, Mr. Pradeepkumar is also close to Ranjith as well. Mr. Pradeepkumar has been able to strike a chord with the urban middle-class voters ever since he defeated Congress leader the late A. Sujanapal from Kozhikode-I segment in 2006. However, he lost to Congress leader M.K. Raghavan, who is equally popular, from ... » Learn More about Ranjith not to enter the fray
Govt can cut excise duty on petrol, diesel by Rs 8.5 a litre without hurting revenues
excise duty on petrol and diesel by up to Rs 8.5 per litre without impacting its target for revenue from the tax on the two fuels, analysts said. Petrol and diesel prices hover at a historic high following a relentless increase in rates over the past nine months. There have been calls by opposition parties as well as sections of society to the government to reduce excise duty to ease consumer pain. "We estimate excise duty on auto fuels in FY22 (April 2021 to March 2022), if it is not cut, at Rs 4.35 lakh crore versus budget estimate of Rs 3.2 lakh crore. "Thus, even if excise duty is cut by Rs 8.5 per litre on or before April 1, 2021, FY22E budget estimate can be met," ICICI Securities said in a note. It expressed optimism for an excise duty cut given demand recovery, impending privatisation and inflation concerns but expected it to be more modest than Rs 8.5 a litre. Excise duty was raised by Rs 13 and Rs 16 per litre on petrol and diesel between March 2020 and May ... » Learn More about Govt can cut excise duty on petrol, diesel by Rs 8.5 a litre without hurting revenues
Extreme weather like floods, droughts, cyclones puts $84 billion of Indian banks debt at risk
An increase in extreme weather events such as floods, droughts and cyclones risk souring debt worth more than Rs 6.19 lakh crore ($84 billion) at India’s biggest financial institutions. That’s according to leading nonprofit environmental disclosure platform CDP . State Bank of India , the country’s largest lender, HDFC Bank , IndusInd Bank and Axis Bank are among the institutions that reported climate risks to CDP in 2020, it said in its annual report released Wednesday. The banks flagged exposure to environmentally sensitive businesses including cement, coal, oil and power. They also listed the effects of cyclones and floods on loan repayments in farming and related sectors. Lenders accounted for 87 per cent of the total risk, valued at about $97 billion, across 67 top Indian companies that responded to CDP. “Climate is the biggest risk to businesses in the long run. Tsingshan Holding Group has signed agreements to provide nickel matte , which is used to make batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), to Huayou Cobalt and battery materials maker CNGR Advanced Material. The Chinese nickel and stainless steel giant said in a statement on its WeChat account on Wednesday that it has agreed to provide 60,000 tonnes of nickel matte to Huayou and another 40,000 tonnes to CNGR within a year, starting October 2021. Chinese firms have been stepping up their focus on EVs in the world's biggest market for such vehicles, as Beijing heavily promotes greener vehicles as a means of reducing chronic air pollution. Huayou and CNGR Advanced did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for a comment. Last July, Tsingshan started trial production of nickel matte with more than 75% content of the metal to meet the increasing demand for EV batteries.
