Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
Residents of Xiazhuang, Chongqing, used to risk their lives whenever they ventured out of the mountain village. Surrounded by steep cliffs about 1,000 meters high, there was only one pathway out of the village, and it took the villagers three days to walk to the main town. In the four decades to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or commuting to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing other activities, said village head Mao Xianglin. As a local saying goes, it is even hard for birds to fly out of the village. Mao, who had been in his position for two years, summoned nearly all of Xiazhuang's 400 villagers for a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains. "Almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project," said the 61-year-old. "Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. We had to do something ... » Learn More about Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
Relocation helps alleviate poverty in Tibet
Living in an extremely harsh environment at high altitude is one of the primary causes of poverty in the Tibet autonomous region. To solve it, the region has relocated people to more favorable places over the years. For residents of Bupal village, it paid off. Bupal is located in steep, treacherous terrain in Tsawarong township in Tibet's Zayul county. Bordering Yunan province, the township is remote and lacks farmland — typical of such poor villages before 2015. Relocating residents changed everything for the better. The people of Bupal had lived on steep mountain slopes. Their shared problems included difficult transportation, unsafe drinking water and poor housing. With an investment more than 70 million yuan ($11 million), more than 400 families and single residents of Bupal and five other communities of Tsawarong were relocated to Rongmad in Zayul county in 2015, wherre the average altitude is 1,600 meters, far lower than Tibet's average of 4,000 meters. There's a ... » Learn More about Relocation helps alleviate poverty in Tibet
PNB scam: Will Nirav Modi be extradited to India? UK court to decide today
London: A UK court will on Thursday decide on the extradition of wanted diamond merchant Nirav Modi, who remains behind bars in a London prison as he contests his extradition to India on charges of fraud and money laundering in the estimated USD 2-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case. The UK court's ruling will put an end to Nirav Modi’s nearly two-year-long legal battle in the PNB scam case. The 49-year-old is expected to appear via videolink from Wandsworth Prison in south-west London at Westminster Magistrates' Court, where District Judge Samuel Goozee is set to hand down his judgment on whether the jeweller has a case to answer before the Indian courts. The magistrates' court ruling will then be sent back to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel for a sign-off, with the possibility of appeals in the High Court on either side depending on the outcome. Nirav Modi was arrested on an extradition warrant on March 19, 2019, and has appeared via videolink from ... » Learn More about PNB scam: Will Nirav Modi be extradited to India? SEBI to soon issue guidelines related to environmental, social and corporate governance space: Tyagi
Regulator SEBI is in “active discussions” with various stakeholders to bring in greater granularity in disclosures by listed companies in environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) space and would soon issue relevant guidelines, SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi said on Thursday. “The proposed guidelines are aimed at achieving much higher level of transparency and accountability from listed entities in the ESG arena,” Mr. Tyagi said in his speech in SEBI-NISM conference. SEBI is holding discussions with a view to meeting the increasing investor demand for ESG related information. Mr. Tyagi noted that certain unique trends have emerged in the wake of the pandemic. Initially, at the beginning of the pandemic, there was a concern that climate change and environmental issues may be relegated to the background as the fund raising in itself was perceived as a challenge in these difficult times. “However, we can see that focus on ESG issues globally and in India has only increased ... » Learn More about SEBI to soon issue guidelines related to environmental, social and corporate governance space: Tyagi
