Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday upheld its decision to give reservation to the Maratha community in government jobs and education by the Maharashtra government. However, the court also said that giving 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community is not feasible and that it should be between 12 to 13 per cent. "We hold and declare that the state government possesses legislative competence to create a separate category of Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) and grant reservation," HC said. The judgment by the High Court comes after a bunch of petitions challenged the Maharashtra government's decision to grant 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community. "We, however, have held that the 16 per cent (quota) should be reduced to 12 to 13 per cent, as recommended by the commission," the bench said. Shah Rukh holding sword, not kirpan in ‘Zero’ poster: Makers to Bombay High Court
Mumbai: The makers of "Zero" told the Bombay High Court Friday that lead actor Shah Rukh Khan was holding a sword and not a 'kirpan' in the movie's poster and trailer. A division bench of Justices B P Dharmadhikari and S V Kotwal was hearing a petition filed by advocate Amritpal Singh Khalsa, claiming that the movie's trailer and poster has hurt sentiments of the Sikh community. The petition, filed earlier this month, sought a direction to the film's director and producers to delete the scenes where Shah Rukh is seen wearing a 'kirpan' (a sword or small dagger carried by Sikhs). The petition also sought a direction to the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) not to grant certification to the movie or to revoke it in case it has already been given. Panaji: The Bombay High Court Friday sentenced beach shack worker Samson D'Souza to ten years' rigorous imprisonment in the 2008 British teenager Scarlett Eden Keeling death case. Scarlett was found dead with bruises on her body at Anjuna beach in Goa on February 18, 2008. D'Souza and Placido Carvalho were accused of leaving her to die after drugging and sexually abusing her. The Goa Children's Court acquitted both last year, but on appeal, the high court Wednesday convicted D'Souza under IPC sections 328 (for administrating drugs), 354 (outraging woman's modesty), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and for child abuse under section 8(2) of the Goa Children's Act. Bombay High Court Verdict On Maharashtra Government’s Maratha Quota Today
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court will on Thursday pronounce its judgment on a bunch of petitions challenging the Maharashtra government's decision to grant 16 per cent quota to Maratha community in government jobs and educational institutions. On November 30 last year, the Maharashtra legislature passed a bill proposing 16 per cent reservation in education and government jobs for the Marathas under the Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) category. Several petitions were filed in the high court challenging the reservation, while a few others were filed in support of the quota. On February 6, a division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre ommenced hearing in all the petitions. In April this year, the court closed the petitions for verdict. Bombay High Court to hear plea against ‘Kedarnath’ tomorrow
Mumbai: The Bombay High Court will hear the plea against Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan-starrer 'Kedarnath' on Thursday. The petition, filed by lawyers Ramesh Chandra Mishra and Prabhakar Tripathi, seeks reassessing of the film by Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on grounds that "it hurts religious sentiments and promotes love-jihad". According to their petition, "The love story between a Hindu girl (played by Sara) and a Muslim boy (played by Sushant) will create a drastic situation and will promote love-jihad." The plea also stated that shooting a love scene at Kedarnath, an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, hurts their religious sentiments.
