Mamallapuram spruced up for informal summit

· October 11, 2019 ·

Mamallapuram: This historical temple town, about an hour-and half drive from Chennai, has come under a multi-layer security cover, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaching here on Friday for a two-day informal summit. Labourers continued to toil in the scorching heat to complete the final touches on Thursday, even as shopkeepers and traders in the coastal town downed shutters and vehicular traffic thinned out ahead of the visit. There is a fresh layer of paint on every wall along the well-swept roads leading to the summit venue, with new grills and decorative pieces at crucial points like the Shore Temple and Five Rathas, where the leaders are expected to meet on Friday. Shop owners were given no official orders to shut their establishments but many chose to take the day off as tourism has taken a beating owing to the summit. · December 15, 2019 ·

LUCKNOW: A day after Lucknow University law department professors blamed vice-chancellor (VC) SK Shukla for the law department paper leak scandal, Shukla on Sunday accused the professors of leaking the question papers to publishers of ‘guess papers’.“I matched the questions that appeared in the law examination paper and those given in the ‘guess papers’ before the dean of law department CP Singh. A look at late 1980s gangster Iqbal Mirchi’s high-rolling life in London

· December 15, 2019 ·

Iqbal Mirchi is back in the news over a case of money-laundering. A look at the late 1980s gangster’s high-rolling life in London A murky real estate deal clinched in late 1980s has resurrected the ghost of Iqbal Mirchi, six years after his death in August 2013. Much like Mirchi, who fled India to make a home in London, his associates and friends, too, managed to duck the wrath of investigating agencies while he was alive. But that’s changed with the filing of the 12,000 page chargesheet against 16 people including the first wife and sons of Iqbal Mirchi and Dheeraj Wadhawan of Dewan Housing Finance Capital (DHFL). The Enforcement Directorate (ED), had also questioned NCP leader Praful Patel, and businessman Raj Kundra earlier. The case has revived the somewhat lapsed but potent imagination in the public domain, of the close links between politics, Bollywood and the underworld. That it takes a long dead and- gone gangster like Mirchi to revive this, is testament to the … [Read more...] about A look at late 1980s gangster Iqbal Mirchi’s high-rolling life in London
