Adaptive tech subsidies could encourage employers to hire persons with disabilities: President Halimah

SINGAPORE - Mr Lim Kay Choong, who has muscular dystrophy, feels that his employer's mindset on persons with disabilities has enabled him to integrate well into the work environment. The company is keen and willing to discuss and make arrangements for him, said Mr Lim. "Having a job gives me financial independence. This helps me gain confidence in other aspects of my life, as I can make my own decisions on whether I want to buy a laptop or go out with friends to a better restaurant. I earn my money and I am happy to spend it," said Mr Lim, 32, a research analyst. Mr Lim has been able to find work with four different organisations with support from the Muscular Dystrophy Association (Singapore) (MDAS). He has been with his current company for more than two years. He shared his experience during a dialogue session with President Halimah Yacob, who visited MDAS on Monday (April 12). Council to give out free rubbish bins to residents

Ipoh City Council (MBI) has plans to complete distributing about 23,000 free rubbish bins to residents by the end of the year. Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the bins would be distributed in stages to allow ratepayers to properly discard their rubbish. The city council, he added, would distribute 8,000 bins in the city this year while Majuperak Utilities Management Sdn Bhd would give out about 10,700 units in Meru. “Majuperak Utilities Management has also given out about 5,000 bins to Manjoi folk. “We are distributing 1,150 bins to the people here in Bandar Baru Putra,” he told reporters after the presentation ceremony. Majuperak Utilities Management was appointed by Perak government to implement waste management services in Meru Raya in December last year. Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic

CAIRO: For Ramadan this year, Magdy Hafez has been longing to reclaim a cherished ritual: Performing the nighttime group prayers called taraweeh at the mosque once again. Last year, the coronavirus upended the 68-year-old Egyptian’s routine of going to the mosque to perform those prayers, traditional during Islam’s holiest month. The pandemic had disrupted Islamic worship the world over, including in Egypt where mosques were closed to worshippers last Ramadan. “I have been going to the mosque for 40 years so it was definitely a very, very, difficult thing,” he said. “But our religion orders us to protect one another.” Still, “It’s a whole other feeling, and the spirituality in Ramadan is like nothing else.” Egypt has since allowed most mosques to reopen for Friday communal prayers and for this Ramadan it will let them hold taraweeh, also with precautions, including shortening its duration. Ramadan, which begins this week, comes as much of the world has been hit by an ... » Learn More about Muslims navigate restrictions in the second Ramadan amid COVID-19 pandemic

DA chief denies pork kickbacks

AGRICULTURE Secretary William Dar on Monday denied allegations that some groups earned kickbacks from the importation of pork amid the shortage of supply because of the African swine fever (ASF). Dar appeared during the first hearing by the Senate Committee of the Whole on the questionable increased pork importation under the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) to address the lack of meat supply. The government has yet to declare a state of calamity due to ASF, despite the spread of the highly contagious disease in 12 regions, 40 provinces, 466 cities and municipalities, and 2,425 communities, according to a report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He said the issuance of Executive Order 128 by President Rodrigo Duterte lowering the tariff on imported meat products went through “rigorous process” and was approved by the National Economic Development Authority. “President Duterte will never allow any corrupt practice under his leadership,” the DA chief ... » Learn More about DA chief denies pork kickbacks

Framedia continues to lead the digital learning innovation in PH

Continuously mitigating credit risk and fraud in operational processes and systems has become a prevailing problem for the financial sector. As businesses deal with the aftermath of the lockdown, lenders may expect a surge in working capital loan requests from entrepreneurs hoping to recover from these trying times. Covering more than the Financial Sector, The Republic Act (RA) 11521 is the law relating to Anti-Money laundering and also includes real estate developers and brokers as well as offshore gaming operators and their service providers. The push for recovery and the demand for business loans means all covered sectors have to improve credit compliance as well as strengthen Anti-Money Laundering (AML) practices to ensure that members and employees comply with the law against fraudulent acts. QC expands Covid-19 testing

QUEZON City has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and private diagnostics clinic Hi-Precision to further increase the city’s capacity to test residents for Covid-19. “Our partnerships will allow us to pool all available resources, weave our efforts and immediately address the needs of our most affected communities,” Mayor Josefina “Joy” Belmonte said. The PRC pledged to allocate 8,000 RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) test kits to the city worth around P3,400 each. Belmonte said this would allow the city government to test more residents and subsequently reinforce its contact tracing efforts. “With the current direct partnership, results are expected to be released at a faster turnaround time,” she added. According to the city’s Public Affairs and Information Services Department, the city plans to open three additional testing centers. The existing community-based testing centers are in Toro Hill Basketball Court (District 1), Payatas ... » Learn More about QC expands Covid-19 testing

P1K cash aid not enough for 2-week ECQ — Bayan Muna

MANILA, Philippines — The government’s P1,000 cash aid is not be enough to buy food and other essential items during a two-week enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). This was according to the party-list group Bayan Muna on Sunday, after one of their members it said, bought items at the Commonwealth Market just enough to feed a family of four for three days. But the “ECQ bubble” which is now being enforced in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal is now going into its second week having started last March 28 after President Rodrigo Duterte approved a recommendation from the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF). According to Bayan Muna, their member Thata Alindogan was able to buy only the following items with her P1,000: rice (5 kilos) – P200 The total was P974.00 — which Bayan Muna said does not leave much in change to buy other items or even pay for transportation fare. “Hindi na nakabili ng baboy dahil P320/kg, ... » Learn More about P1K cash aid not enough for 2-week ECQ — Bayan Muna

Box Office: ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Roars to $13.4 Million in Second Weekend

Moviegoers sit socially distanced as they wait for the movie “Godzilla vs. Kong” on the reopening day of the TCL Chinese theatre during the outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), in Los Angeles, California, U.S., March 31, 2021. REUTERS/Mario Anzuoni LOS ANGELES – “Godzilla vs. Kong” stormed to the top of the domestic box office, picking up $13.4 million in its second weekend of release. That brings the monster mashup’s stateside haul to $69.5 million, an impressive gross considering it comes in the midst of a global pandemic. The Legendary and Warner Bros. release’s robust commercial performance has been all the more notable because it comes as COVID restrictions are in place, limiting capacity in theaters, and also as the film is available on HBO Max. The film dropped 58 percent compared to its opening weekend gross of $32.2 million. Warner Bros. is releasing its entire 2021 slate on HBO Max at the same time they debut in theaters as a concession to coronavirus and a ... » Learn More about Box Office: ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Roars to $13.4 Million in Second Weekend
