IMAGES: Queen of Style: Kate’s first year
Next Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrated their first wedding anniversary yesterday. We take a look at how the Duchess of Cambridge's fashion sense has evolved over the past year, ever since she stepped into royal shoes! I t's been 12 months since the they tied the knot on April 29, 2011, but the hoopla surrounding them continues to build. Although the royal couple decided to celebrate their first anniversary in a rather low-key manner which didn't involve any public appearances, hardly a week goes by without capturing them on camera; particularly Kate, who has won hearts the world over ever since she married her Prince Charming. And more than her gracious demeanour and lovely smile, it's the erstwhile Miss Middleton's fashion statements that attract all the attention -- whatever she wears today is tomorrow's rage! Nominated to several best-dressed list s over the years (even before she was married), she's particularly endeared herself to ... » Learn More about IMAGES: Queen of Style: Kate’s first year
Get real about artificial intelligence
In recent years, artificial intelligence has been attracting increasing attention, money and talent. But much of the hype is the result of myths and misconceptions being peddled by people outside of the field. For many years, the field was growing incrementally, with existing approaches performing around 1-2 percent better each year on standard benchmarks. But there was a real breakthrough in 2012, when computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton and his colleagues at the University of Toronto showed that their "deep learning" algorithms could beat state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms by a margin of 10.8 percentage points on the ImageNet Challenge (a benchmark dataset). At the same time, AI researchers were benefiting from ever-more powerful tools, including cost-effective cloud computing, fast and cheap number-crunching hardware (GPUs), seamless data sharing through the internet, and advances in high-quality open-source software. Owing to these factors, machine learning, and ... » Learn More about Get real about artificial intelligence
KMC lab finds new COVID-19 variant with origin in Kurnool
Kurnool Medical College’s VRDL is the first laboratory in South India to collaborate in employing a new protocol – ‘COVIDSeq Next-Generation Sequencing’ – for diagnosis and phylogenetic analysis of SARS nCoV-2 (COVID-19) samples. This is the next-generation confirmatory test for COVID-19 done at CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, and will be useful for other viruses in the future. The sequencing approach has also provided insights into the evolution and genetic epidemiology of the SARS-CoV-2 samples, in addition to detecting a new variant N440K that was responsible for causing re-infections. Findings In a research article published in the German Scientific Journal, ‘Plos One’, on February 17, the authors said that seven institutions in India that were permitted by the CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology to use the protocol (approved for clinical trials by the US Food & Drug Administration) could discover two lineages of SARS nCOV-2 (B.1.112 ... » Learn More about KMC lab finds new COVID-19 variant with origin in Kurnool
