EU divided over vaccine alliance
Bloc's joint jab procurement program now under criticism for being too slow Concern over the European Union's slow-moving COVID-19 vaccination strategy has sparked division on how to tackle the pandemic. It has emerged that a planned "vaccine alliance" between Austria, Denmark and Israel threatens to undermine the European Commission's coordinated purchasing effort, with plans said to already be at an "advanced stage" between the three nations. A report in the Financial Times said Austria's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will this week travel to Israel, which is not in the EU, to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for discussions on a new "joint approach". Netanyahu said in public remarks on Monday that the leaders will also talk about the idea of "an international corporation for manufacturing vaccines", Reuters reported. Kurz told German newspaper Bild that the European Medicines Agency, known as the EMA, is "too slow" to ... » Learn More about EU divided over vaccine alliance
Meatless products hit stride in pandemic

Gray Zone’s reports of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang under threat of ‘genocide’ an outright lie: FM
The claims by Grey Zone, an independent news website in the US, that "the Chinese government is committing genocide against ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region" are an outright lie, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Monday. These reports also show that facts speak louder than words and justice is essentially in the eye of the beholder. The reports released by the Grey Zone pointed out the misuse of data, misrepresentation of facts, fabrication of cases and logical inconsistencies in the so-called investigation report, revealing the true nature of the report's author, Adrian Zenz (who calls himself Zheng Guo'en in Chinese), said Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, at the press conference. "Zenz and some international anti-China forces have concocted rumors and lies about Xinjiang for their personally driven ulterior motives,, using fake news to gain attention and sully China's reputation in the process," Wang said. However, no matter how ... » Learn More about Gray Zone’s reports of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang under threat of ‘genocide’ an outright lie: FM
Reviving the Iran deal: On Biden attempt to revive JCPOA
U.S. President Joe Biden’s attempts to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), better known as the Iran nuclear deal , have not seen any breakthrough with both sides waiting for the other to blink. The Biden administration says it would return to the deal if Iran starts complying with its terms. Tehran, on the other side, asks the U.S., which unilaterally quit the deal under the Donald Trump administration in May 2018, to return to the agreement first and lift sanctions on Iran. The EU’s efforts to organise direct U.S.-Iran talks were also unsuccessful as Tehran reportedly rejected the offer. Iran has also accelerated its nuclear programme. This game of chicken continues as the clock is ticking. Iran will elect a new President in June. Hassan Rouhani, who bet his presidency on the deal — only to be repudiated by Mr. Trump — cannot stand in a third consecutive election. There is no guarantee that a moderate like Mr. Rouhani would be elected this time. And it is not a ... » Learn More about Reviving the Iran deal: On Biden attempt to revive JCPOA
Allow us to resume mining in Aravalli Hills: Haryana
The Haryana government has appealed to the Supreme Court to permit it to resume mining in the Aravalli Hills on the grounds that the pandemic had grounded the State’s economy to a halt. The Supreme Court is slated to hear the petition on Thursday. Mining in the region has been banned since 2002 under the Supreme Court orders, unless expressly permitted by the Union Environment Ministry. However, mining continued illegally. A 2018 report by a Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) said 25% of the Aravalli range has been lost due to illegal mining in Rajasthan since 1967-68. Vikrant Tongad, environmentalist and with the Social Action for Forest Environment, told The Hindu that the Haryana government had proposed to allow mining activities in 600 hectares. Following the move, Mr. Tongad filed his own petition on Monday requesting the court to allow him to “intervene” in the ongoing writ petition. The Aravalli hills spanning Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and ... » Learn More about Allow us to resume mining in Aravalli Hills: Haryana
