Recent drone attack on Saudi royal palace launched from Iraq
Explosive-laden drones that targeted Saudi Arabia’s royal palace in the kingdom’s capital last month were launched from inside Iraq, a senior Iran-backed militia official in Baghdad and a U.S. official said. Speaking to The Associated Press this week, the militia official said three drones were launched from Iraqi-Saudi border areas by a relatively unknown Iran-backed faction in Iraq and crashed into the royal complex in Riyadh on Jan. 23, exacerbating regional tensions. Attacks on the Saudi capital have been sporadic amid the kingdom’s yearslong war against neighbouring Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Earlier this month, the rebels targeted an airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia with bomb-laden drones, causing a civilian plane on the tarmac to catch fire. The Iran-aligned Houthi rebels, however, denied carrying out an attack that targeted Saudi Arabia’s Yamama Palace on Jan. 23. The comments by the senior Iraqi militia official mark the first time an Iran-backed group has ... » Learn More about Recent drone attack on Saudi royal palace launched from Iraq
Saudi prince approved killing of Khashoggi: US report
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman approved an operation to capture or kill journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, according to a United States intelligence report submitted to Congress. Fifty-nine-year-old Khashoggi, a dissident Saudi journalist who lived in the US as a legal permanent resident and wrote for the Washington Post, was critical of the prince's policies and was killed in the Saudi Arabian Consulate in the Turkish city on October 2, 2018. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in the report that at the time of the Khashoggi murder, the prince probably fostered an environment in which aides were afraid that failure to complete assigned tasks might result in him firing or arresting them. This suggests that the aides were unlikely to question the prince's orders or undertake sensitive actions without his consent, said the report dated February 11, a declassified portion of which was submitted to Congress on Friday. FATF grey-listing: Do you know how badly it has impacted Pakistan’s economy?
Islamabad: At a time when Pakistan’s progress on countering terror-financing and money laundering is being scrutinised at the Plenary meeting of the global watchdog Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a report has highlighted that Pakistan has suffered losses worth billions due to being placed in the FATF`s grey list thrice since 2008. The findings were shared in a research paper published by an independent think tank named Tabadlab, titled "Bearing the cost of global politics, the impact of FATF grey-listing on Pakistan’s economy". The research paper revealed that "grey-listing event spanned from 2008 to 2019, which may have been one of the reasons why Pakistan’s cumulative GDP losses towered up to at least USD 38 billion". "Data suggested that Pakistan’s removal from the grey list of the FATF has at times led to revival of the economy, as evident from an increase in the level of GDP for the years 2017 and 2018," argued the author of the research paper. ByteDance agrees to $92 million privacy settlement with US TikTok users
Washington: ByteDance has agreed to a $92 million class-action settlement to settle data privacy claims from some U.S. TikTok users, according to documents filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Illinois. ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns the short video app that has more than 100 million U.S. users, agreed to the settlement after more than a year of litigation. "While we disagree with the assertions, rather than go through lengthy litigation, we`d like to focus our efforts on building a safe and joyful experience for the TikTok community," TikTok said Thursday. The settlement still requires court approval. The lawsuits claimed the TikTok app "infiltrates its users` devices and extracts a broad array of private data including biometric data and content that defendants use to track and profile TikTok users for the purpose of, among other things, ad targeting and profit." The settlement was reached after "an expert-led inside look at TikTok`s source code" ... » Learn More about ByteDance agrees to $92 million privacy settlement with US TikTok users
Mamata Banerjee asks whether election dates were announced as per suggestions of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on February 26 questioned the rationale behind Election Commission of India holding the 2021 Assembly polls in the State in eight phases . “West Bengal has 294 seats. Why will elections be held here in eight phases? This is for the benefit of whom? There should be some rationale behind the decision,” Ms. Banerjee said hours after the ECI announced dates for Assembly polls in the State.
