That the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security is working to draw up a plan for delaying retirement has sparked a heated debate. Vice-minister You Jun said on Friday the ministry will widely solicit opinion to make it as acceptable as possible for all. Delayed retirement means postponing the retirement age, and the advantages of this can be summed up in three ways. It is good for the sustainability of the pension fund system, the stability of the labor supply and the integration of individuals into society to create more wealth. But given other countries' practices, delayed retirement does not necessarily mitigate the heavy pressure rapid aging imposes on a society. Take Japan, for example. With the highest proportion of elderly citizens of any country in the world, it increased the normal retirement age from 50 to 65 in four decades, and the number may reach 70 in the near future. However, Japan is still not able to resolve its pension crisis and labor shortage, as ... » Learn More about Flexible retirement an option for ‘aging society’

US military action not a good omen: China Daily editorial
The US strike in eastern Syria on Friday shows the new US administration under Joe Biden, for all its stated willingness to amend its predecessor's foreign policy woes, has no intention of changing the US policy in the Middle East. This is certainly not good news for either the region or the world at large. In what was intended, and widely perceived to be a strike with limited scope and time frame, the United States struck the positions of Iran-backed militia groups in Syria's eastern province of Deir al-Zour near the Iraqi border, killing 22 fighters. The US claimed it was responding to the recent rocket attacks launched by the militia groups on US forces in the region. But the strike serves multiple purposes, not least sending the message that the US is willing to again flex its military muscles to advance its interests in international settings. Being locked in a proxy war in Syria, the US throwing its weight behind the rebels which are in a defensive position against the ... » Learn More about US military action not a good omen: China Daily editorial

OPEC+ debates whether to raise or freeze oil output as price recovers
DUBAI/MOSCOW: OPEC and its allies in will decide on Thursday whether to freeze oil output or raise it slightly from April as a recent price rally is clouded by concern over the fragility of economic recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic. The market has been expecting the OPEC+ group of producers to ease supply cuts by about 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) from April. OPEC's de facto leader Saudi Arabia has also been expected to partially or fully end its voluntary production cut of an additional 1 million bpd. But three OPEC+ sources said on Wednesday that some key members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) had suggested that output across the OPEC+ group should be kept unchanged. It was not immediately clear whether Saudi Arabia would end its voluntary cuts or extend them, they said. Russia has been insisting on raising output to avoid prices spiking any further and lending support to shale oil output from the United States , which is not ... » Learn More about OPEC+ debates whether to raise or freeze oil output as price recovers

While his party leaders were extremely upset at Thackeray's action, Owaisi chose not to react; perhaps since the vociferous leader is focused on the fast approaching Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. Efficacious too: On Covaxin
Vaccine efficacy of 80.6% for Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin at the first interim analysis of phase-3 trials in India is indeed promising, though it took two months for the data to become available after the vaccine was approved for ‘restricted emergency use’ by the Indian drug regulator. The vaccine efficacy was measured based on symptomatic COVID-19 disease — mild, moderate or severe — two weeks after the second dose. The interim analysis undertaken at the first endpoint of 43 COVID-19 cases in the phase-3 trial carried out across 26 sites in India found 36 cases in the placebo group while only seven COVID-19 cases in the arm that received two doses of the vaccine given 28 days apart. The phase-3 trial that began last November recruited 25,800 participants, with one half receiving the vaccine and the other, a placebo. While the phase-3 trial will continue till 130 participants in both groups put together develop COVID-19 disease, another interim analysis will be carried out when there are ... » Learn More about Efficacious too: On Covaxin

Pitch looks the same but we learn our lessons: Root
'I think that as batters if you don't score runs, you will always look at yourselves, you'll always try and find ways to improve and we've certainly done that.' IMAGE: Joe Root bats in the nets in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Photograph: England Cricket/Twitter England skipper Joe Root on Wednesday said the pitch for the fourth and final Test against India looks very similar to the one on which his team was decimated in the third game but the visitors have learnt their lessons to be ready for the challenge starting Thursday. India need to either draw or win the match to find a place in the World Test Championships final in June, while a win for England would revive some of the lost confidence after the thrashing inside two days in the third Test. "It's (the pitch) looking very similar...I think the most important thing is that we learn all the lessons from the last two Test matches and make sure we're back for it," Root said when asked about the raging debate over the ... » Learn More about Pitch looks the same but we learn our lessons: Root
