Email Digital Story Innovation Team By Mark Doman Updated March 05, 2021 09:30:45 Map: Antarctica Since the early 70s, satellites have surveyed the ebb and flow of vast ice masses at the edge of Antarctica. The data being collected from space has allowed scientists to monitor huge areas of the icy continent, even through the darkness and hostility of an Antarctic winter. One of the more spectacular sights captured by the satellites is the calving of city-sized icebergs from ice shelves — the giant glaciers transporting ice from the middle of the continent out to sea. Just last week, a huge 1,200-square-kilometre iceberg broke away from the Brunt Ice Shelf near the Weddell Sea. It's the first large iceberg to break off from this shelf in 50 years. "A lot of these big ice shelves, we'll normally get, like, one iceberg produced from the shelf during our careers," said Dr Sue Cook, a glaciologist with the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership. China to speed up tapping new energy sources, but coal stays in mix
BEIJING : China set a modest five-year growth target on Friday for its nuclear power generation capacity and promised quicker development of alternative energy sources as it seeks to cut its carbon footprint, but left its coal industry largely untouched. The world's third-largest largest nuclear power producer, aims to have 70 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity by 2025, the government said in its 2021-2025 plan delivered to the Chinese parliament. China originally aimed to bring its total nuclear installed capacity to 58 GW by 2020 but failed to meet the target following a long moratorium on new projects as well as delays at new third-generation plants. The plan also called for a rapid boost to wind and solar power generation and promotion of electricity generation from waste to help China meet its goal of having non-fossil fuels meet around 20% of total energy consumption by 2025. The world's top energy consumer has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2060 but has to ... » Learn More about China to speed up tapping new energy sources, but coal stays in mix
Feature: Impending rainy season poses threat to displaced Yemenis
Video Player Close SANAA, March 5 (Xinhua) -- After suffering coldness inside their draughty huts for months, the internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the Dharawan camp near Yemen's capital Sanaa now have to prepare for another threat - the upcoming rainy season. "We practically live in the open air. There isn't much we can do. We have collected stones to build huts but it's leaky everywhere," Hassan Hakami, an IDP at the camp, told Xinhua. Hakami said the stone huts they built sometimes collapsed in heavy rains, causing injuries to residents here. "When they get hurt, there is no medical help. A small injury can turn out to be lethal in the end," he added. The rainy season in Yemen lasts from March to October. Besides heavy rains and floods, the season will also witness the increase of infections of cholera, malaria, and dengue fever as people in the country, especially the millions living in IDP camps, lack access to sanitary supplies. Why India must not tinker with B’desh border deal
By revising the India-Bangladesh land boundary agreement, the NDA is going for short-term gains and losing the long-term perspective, says Gautam Sen. T he Union Cabinet has cleared a Constitution amendment bill on a modified land boundary agreement with Bangladesh, excluding the exchange of enclaves and territories in adverse possession in the Assam segment. Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Shahriar Alam is reported tohavestated to themedia that Dhaka is not yet clear on this issue. It is clear that political compulsions of the Bharatiya Janata Party which dominates the National Democratic Alliance government, inthe context of the assembly elections in Assam next year, has driven the government to decide against an LBA as it has been originally framed to encompass the entire India-Bangladesh border. The BJP does not want to be seen as compromising on surrender of excess Indian land in Assam to Bangladesh. Russia launches satellite to monitor climate in Arctic
Russia launched its space satellite Arktika-M on Sunday on a mission to monitor the climate and environment in the Arctic amid a push by the Kremlin to expand the country’s activities in the region. The Arctic has warmed more than twice as fast as the global average over the last three decades and Moscow is seeking to develop the energy-rich region, investing in the Northern Sea Route for shipping across its long northern flank as ice melts. The satellite successfully reached its intended orbit after being launched from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur cosmodrome by a Soyuz rocket, Dmitry Rogozin, the head of Russia’s Roscosmos space agency, said in a post on Twitter. Russia plans to send up a second satellite in 2023 and, combined, the two will offer round-the-clock, all-weather monitoring of the Arctic Ocean and the surface of the Earth, Roscosmos said. #ArktikaM : T+09:22 min → separation of the upper stage from the third stage of the rocket. pic.twitter.com/Hm0lUMUc5k — ... » Learn More about Russia launches satellite to monitor climate in Arctic
