WASHINGTON - This week, the American Astronomical Society is meeting in Seattle, but no one from NASA is attending. In Phoenix, thousands of meteorologists are presenting research on climate change and extreme weather, but hundreds of representatives from the National Weather Service and other US agencies canceled at the 11th hour. The US government shutdown, now well into its third week, may be focused on a budget dispute between President Donald Trump and Congress over border security, but it is having a ripple effect on the scientific community. Keith Seitter, the executive director of the American Meteorological Society, told AFP that the absence of about 700 US government employees at his group's annual meeting will mean the loss of about 800 presentations. It slashed total attendance at the five-day meeting in Arizona from 4,400 to about 3,700, he said. Many of the absentees work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is focused on the state of … [Read more...] about News Shutdown keeps US experts away from scientific conferences

MAILBAG: Leafs take a big hit with Hyman’s injury
By Kevin McGran Sports Reporter Fri., Dec. 21, 2018 The next three weeks promise to be very interesting for the Maple Leafs, without Zach Hyman. It means somebody else gets some prime real estate, on the left wing with John Tavares. Hyman has been a very effective winger — a puck digger, a forechecker, a heavy presence along the boards and in front of his net. Hyman has been a very effective winger — a puck digger, a forechecker, a heavy presence along the boards and in front of his net. He has his detractors though because he doesn’t have an elite finish like the other two players he usually plays with, whether that’s Tavares and Mitch Marner now or Auston Matthews and William Nylander the past couple of years. Their critique: you’d think he’d have more offence (seven goals, eight assists) or better possession numbers (50.61 per cent this year). Overlooked though is just how physical he is. No one gets hit as much Hyman. … [Read more...] about MAILBAG: Leafs take a big hit with Hyman’s injury
Hotel room will be 300 km up in space and $792,000 a night
By Justin Bachman Bloomberg Mon., April 9, 2018 Bloomberg—Aboard the International Space Station, an astronaut’s life is typically work, exercise, rest, repeat. But what if your chance of having the right stuff for NASA’s astronaut corps is, to say the least, minimal? Aurora Station, billed as the “first luxury hotel in space,” may be for you. Houston-based Orion Span Inc. hopes to launch the modular station in late 2021 and welcome its first guests the following year, with two crew members accompanying each excursion. The platform would orbit 300 kilometres above Earth, offering six guests 384 sunrises and sunsets as they race around the planet for 12 days at incredibly high speeds. Once, such a thing would have clearly been the stuff of fiction. Now, in the age of SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic, the idea that a private company would launch an orbiting hotel seems almost pedestrian. “We want to get people into space … [Read more...] about Hotel room will be 300 km up in space and $792,000 a night

After frosty start to MLB season, fans could see more snow at the ballpark this weekend
By Ben Walker The Associated Press Fri., April 6, 2018 Steady and sure-handed, Minnesota Twins second baseman Brian Dozier is a confident mitt man. But the Gold Glover didn’t feel that way this week, standing in the snow globe of PNC Park in Pittsburgh. “I always want the ball to hit to me, but that was the one time where I was hoping it wouldn’t be hit my way,” Dozier said. “It would have been very tough trying to catch a pop-up in those conditions.” Read more: Yankees manager Aaron Boone doesn’t regret his late-game blunder Article Continued Below Astros, Nationals unstoppable; Yankees, Phillies managers show their inexperience Series preview: Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers From Yankee Stadium to Great American Ball Park to Comerica Park, the big winner so far this season is the wintry mix.
