DID the Sandiganbayan issue a warrant for the arrest of former first lady Imelda Marcos after she failed to appear for the Nov. 9 promulgation of sentence upon her conviction on seven counts of graft for amassing illegal wealth? As we write this, the police have not received such an order from the Sandiganbayan to arrest the 89-year-old congresswoman from the 2nd district of Ilocos Norte. In its order after her non-appearance, the court said: “Let a warrant of arrest be issued against the accused.” Is that statement the warrant itself? Is it enough basis for the police to arrest the convict? If it is not yet the proper warrant, what or who is delaying its issuance? Under normal circumstances involving plain folk, it should not be difficult for policemen (or even such citizens as Robin Padilla) to arrest persons roaming free after their conviction on multiple counts of graft. Arresting without a warrant
MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday afternoon dared President Rodrigo Duterte to make a categorical statement on camera ordering the police and military to arrest him. This, he said, is to avoid putting the military and the police in a bind over whether or not to arrest him, adding that Duterte can easily deny making such orders in the absence of a categorical statement. "Gusto ko, sabihin niya sa harap ng camera, utusan niya AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines], PNP [Philippine National Police], balewalain na lahat ng legalities at ipaaresto ako. Magpaka-lalaki si Mr. Duterte," Trillanes told reporters. Trillanes said the military and the police are just acting on orders from higher-ups. This comes after the Department of National Defense insisted that the military can arrest Trillanes even without a warrant, on the basis of court martial proceedings. But the senator presented documents to the media showing that he was already deemed resigned from the military as early … [Read more...] about News Trillanes dares Duterte to order on cam his arrest
MANILA - Senator Antonio Trillanes IV could be arrested even without a warrant of arrest following President Rodrigo Duterte's withdrawal of his amnesty, the Department of Defense said Tuesday. Duterte voided the amnesty that absolved Trillanes of charges for leading 2 failed mutinies because of the soldier-turned-lawmaker's alleged failure to submit an application form and express guilt for his crimes. Trillanes amnesty voided; senator faces charges, arrest With the withdrawal of the amnesty, Trillanes is now considered a member of the military again, said DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong. "Now according to the Supreme Court, a court-martial is a disciplinary power vested on the President as the Commander-in-Chief kaya he can call for the court-martial of any personnel and officer," Andolong told reporters. The military … [Read more...] about News Trillanes can be arrested without warrant
MANILA - Senators on Wednesday called out the Philippine National Police for sending arresting officers to apprehend Senator Antonio Trillanes IV even without a warrant. President Rodrigo Duterte withdrew amnesty for Trillanes, his most vocal critic and directed authorities to pursue criminal and administrative charges against the former Navy lieutenant over 2 failed military uprisings. The Makati RTC branch 148, which heard Trillanes coup d'etat case, has not issued a warrant and set a hearing on Sept. 13. "As far as I know no court has issued an arrest warrant so how can they arrest Senator Trillanes," Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto told reporters. "Nakakatawa nga yung mga pulis bakit pa nagpunta dito wala namang warrant? Ano gagawin nila?" Senator Francis Escudero said. (I found it funny. Why did the police come here when they don't have a warrant? What will they do?) Trillanes has been holed up in his office since Tuesday after members of the Criminal Investigation and … [Read more...] about News Senators slam police move to arrest Trillanes in Senate halls
source Leon Neal/Getty Images Emmanuel Macron reportedly wants the EU to be more generous in Brexit talks in order to avoid no deal. The French President is set to call for more flexibility in certain areas at a summit of European leaders next month. He is likely to focus on the area of security, where the UK is set to be excluded from a number of programmes. Both sides are still a long way from an agreement on the Northern Irish border. LONDON – Emmanuel Macron has urged European leaders to throw Theresa May a lifeline and prevent the United Kingdom crashing out of the EU without a deal. The French President believes no deal would do huge damage to the EU, according to The Times. Because of this, Macron will reportedly use a summit of EU leaders in Austria next month to argue for an EU based on “concentric circles,” with EU nation states in the central ring, and the UK close by in the second ring. “He [Macron] sees a no-deal … [Read more...] about Macron is prepared to throw May a Brexit lifeline and stop Britain crashing out without a deal
