Parliament: New cyber security label for smart devices
SINGAPORE - A cyber security label similar to the energy efficiency labels on home appliances will be rolled out to help buyers of smart devices better judge how exposed they are to cyber risks. This label will be stuck on Wi-Fi routers and smart home hubs, for starters, as part of Singapore's new Safer Cyberspace Masterplan designed to protect consumers and small firms. The labelling scheme will be extended to more of these so-called Internet of Things (IoT) or connected devices to help users, who are often unaware of their security risks. Announced by Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information (MCI) Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Tuesday (March 2), the initiative aims to address this "growing area of concern". "The scheme will raise consumer awareness of more secure products and aims to encourage manufacturers to adopt additional cyber security safeguards," said Dr Janil during the debate on MCI's budget. To be launched later this year, the ... » Learn More about Parliament: New cyber security label for smart devices
Galvez wants overhaul of PH health care system
Vaccine czar and chief implementer of the National Task Force Against Covid-19 Carlito Galvez Jr. renewed the call for the passage of a law that would modernize the country’s health care system against future pandemics. “We have to dedicate our minds, we are really heading to health sufficiency for the next pandemic. I believe the universal health care that we have promoted and enacted is not enough; we have to work toward the Health Security Act or maybe the DoH (Department of Health) modernization program in order for us to fully bridge the valley of death,” Galvez said. Quezon City Rep. Angelina Tan said such a law was already in the works. “We have already passed a bill called the National Health Security Act. Kindly help us to lobby and push that bill in the Senate, sir,” Tan told Galvez. Tan, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Health was referring to the merged version of House Bill 6493 and House Bill 6081 filed by Tan and Muntinlupa Rep. Unless we end inequities, we will fail to achieve Health for All
“EVERYONE is trying to apply the human rights lens. But unfortunately, on key matters of equity, many communities right now are in the rear-view mirror and not being observed through the lens of equity and human rights,” said Dr. Michael Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization health emergencies program. “This pandemic is uneven around the world and uneven in its impact. It has peeled away the bandages from old wounds of our society, and it has also revealed and driven new inequities. We are not doing a good job in ensuring that the basic human rights approaches are being upheld — right to access health and right to personal dignity. In some cases, Covid-19 has been used as a means of denying people their rights. Yes, we have seen great examples of community resilience and people and civil society organizations coming together in solidarity to fight this epidemic. But if we are to give grades on how we are doing in leaving no one behind right now, we get an F,” ... » Learn More about Unless we end inequities, we will fail to achieve Health for All

NKorea accuses UN of double standards
SEOUL: Nuclear-armed North Korea accused the UN Security Council of double standards Monday ahead of a meeting on its latest missile test. Pyongyang last week launched two weapons assessed by the US and others to be short-range ballistic missiles, which it is banned from under Security Council resolutions. It was the first substantive provocation since the new US administration of President Joe Biden took office, which is in the final stages of a review on policy towards the North. Biden warned the isolated state that “there will be responses if they choose to escalate,” while European members of the Security Council requested an urgent meeting Tuesday to discuss the launch. In a statement carried by the North’s official KCNA news agency, senior foreign ministry official Jo Chol Su said the test was of a new “tactical guided missile.” “Many other countries across the globe are firing all kinds of projectiles,” he said, warning that a “double standard” by the Security Council ... » Learn More about NKorea accuses UN of double standards
PH health capacity nears red line – WHO
THE World Health Organization (WHO) views the increasing number of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases in the Philippines as “concerning” and urges the government to continue improving its health care capacity. Speaking during a virtual press conference in celebration of World Health Day on Wednesday, WHO Western Pacific Regional Director Dr. Takeshi Kasai noted that the Covid surge was inching toward the “red line.” “We know that once we cross the ‘red line’, we put the health care workers in a difficult situation, and once health care workers get [the] infection, the health care capacity goes down,” Kasai said. There were many factors for the surge, chief of which is the emergence of the variants of concern, such as the B117, B1351 and the P1 variants as well as the P3 variant first discovered in Central Visayas, he said. Kasai also noted the half-hearted compliance with minimum health standards, such as wearing of masks and face shields and physical distancing. He ... » Learn More about PH health capacity nears red line – WHO

MHA to get tough on abuse of security officers; changes to the assessment of security companies
SINGAPORE - Those who abuse and harass private security officers carrying out their work could be liable under new offences that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is looking into instituting. MHA said it intends to better protect private security officers from harassment or abuse, and is looking at amending the Private Security Industry Act in 2021. In a statement on Friday (March 27), MHA said private security officers play an important role in ensuring the safety and security of the premises to which they are deployed. "However, during the course of their work, they can face verbal and sometimes physical abuse. MHA takes a serious view of the harassment and abuse of private security officers," said the ministry.
