The secret network helping hundreds of Myanmar police flee to India
AIZAWL, India - Strung across remote mountain settlements, a secret network of activists and volunteers is helping spirit hundreds of defecting Myanmar policemen away from the military’s brutal crackdown on dissent and into relative safety in a small northeastern Indian state. Their escape - by car, motorcycle and on foot through densely forested terrain - is often guided by volunteer-led groups on both sides of the border, according to accounts from at least 10 people who are involved in the loose-knit network or have used it to cross the border. Once in India, local activists and residents provide food and shelter in safe houses, the people said. Some police personnel have said they fled Myanmar because they feared persecution after refusing to obey the military junta’s orders to shoot protesters. More than 1,000 people fleeing violence in Myanmar have crossed into neighbouring India’s Mizoram state since late February, according to Indian lawmaker K. Natura Loft DBSS review: A condo-looking HDB flat with excellent amenities
Project: Natura Loft HDB Town Bishan Address: 273A-B, 275A Bishan Street 24 Lease Start Date: Aug 2011 No. of Units: 480 If Natura Loft sounds familiar to you, it could be because it has been making headlines for minting million dollar HDBs. Launched in November 2008 (right smack in the middle of the Global Financial Crisis), Natura Loft was the fourth DBSS project in Singapore that promised condo-like features such as an underground basement carpark (this was not the norm in HDBs then) and a condominium-looking facade. The developer Qingjian Realty (also the developer of the upcoming Forett at Bukit Timah) braved the gloomy market sentiments and pushed on with its marketing efforts, with four-room flat prices ranging from $465K – $586K, while five-room flat prices ranged between $590K – $739K. This may not sound like a lot now, but back then, this was a lot of money for property. In fact, during the launch, Bishan Loft EC just reached its first ... » Learn More about Natura Loft DBSS review: A condo-looking HDB flat with excellent amenities

White House considering US$3 trillion for US economy: Reports
WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden's administration is considering spending US$3 trillion on infrastructure in the United States, split into two Bills that face narrow paths to approval in Congress, US media reported on Monday (Mar 22). The infrastructure plan would follow the US$1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Biden signed earlier month, which was aimed at helping the world's largest economy recover from the damage done by the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden, who took office in January, vowed to pass a second Bill aimed at improving infrastructure in the United States and creating jobs, and US media reported that would likely be divided up into two proposals costing a total of US$3 trillion. China moving from poverty alleviation to rural revitalisation
BEIJING (The StraitsTimes/ANN): Food security and self-reliance will be top priority as China moves from its poverty alleviation campaign to a new strategy to revitalise the countryside and narrow the yawning urban-rural gap. It will ramp up infrastructure-building, while bringing new innovation in farming technology to peasants and providing funding for start-ups as it plugs the rural areas into the supply chain. At the heart of this drive is food security, as President Xi Jinping pushes ahead with a new "dual circulation" economic plan to develop self-sufficiency amid external threats of decoupling and disruption to food supplies. "From poverty alleviation to rural revitalisation, this will be an important shift of our focus," said Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Tang Renjian on Tuesday (April 6). "First, we need to ensure food security. Food security is indeed a top priority of governance," he told reporters at a news conference for the release of a White Paper on ... » Learn More about China moving from poverty alleviation to rural revitalisation
IN FOCUS: From ‘devastated’ land to many long trails: Singapore’s path to becoming a hiker’s paradise
SINGAPORE: The soft crunch of footsteps on fallen leaves, the twitter of birds and the occasional rustling of branches as long-tailed macaques hop from tree to tree. This is the soundtrack of 74-year-old Mathias Chay’s regular morning hikes around MacRitchie Reservoir. “I appreciate the natural voices of nature. It calms you down,” said the veteran hiker, who walks 12km to 13km several times a week. These sounds have remained largely unchanged since Mr Chay fell in love with hiking more than 40 years ago. But heading into nature these days has otherwise become a “tremendously” different experience for him. What used to be narrow, rugged paths – sometimes overrun with vegetation – have turned into wider, more well-formed trails, he said. Over the decades, he has also found himself jostling with a growing number of visitors on these routes. He added: "There were also not many signboards (in the past), so it was very easy (to get lost) if you were not careful." ... » Learn More about IN FOCUS: From ‘devastated’ land to many long trails: Singapore’s path to becoming a hiker’s paradise
Jatuporn’s best days may be behind him
Jatuporn Prompan addresses the rally at Santiporn Park on April 10, 2021, calling for unity from all sides to remove Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha from office. (Photo by Wichan Charoenkiatpakul) There is a lot riding on veteran activist Jatuporn Prompan kick-starting a mass protest targeting Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha's ouster. But if Mr Jatuporn thought that because he chairs the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) he could count on the support of the red shirts to solidify the campaign against the government, he may be heading for disappointment. For one thing, the intensity of the red shirt movement's activism that served as a dominant force in politics a decade ago has paled against the evolving political situation of today, according to academics. Also, some leading red shirt figures are keen to know what Mr Jatuporn's intentions are in waging the anti-government campaign this time around under the banner of "Sammakhi prachachon pheu prathet ... » Learn More about Jatuporn’s best days may be behind him
Road to ruin: informal byways sow seeds of destruction in Colombia’s Amazon
SAN VICENTE DEL CAGUAN, Caqueta, Colombia (Reuters) - The dirt tracks winding through southern Colombia's tangled jungle often mark the beginning of the end for besieged patches of rainforest in this part of the Amazon. Across San Vicente del Caguan, one of the country's most deforested regions, illegal and informal roads fan out in an ever-expanding network, bringing visitors, commercial interests and farmers and ranchers who clear and burn the land. The result is the steady decay of Colombia's Amazon. A Reuters map of the region shows a lattice of lines that crisscross one another and creep southward into the forest and fan out on all sides. (Graphic: https://tmsnrt.rs/329ehRE) The destruction, which is striking on the ground, is significant enough to be visible from the sky. Patches of deforestation appear at the furthest extent of the roads, according to the map, which underlines the impact of unplanned roadbuilding by combining satellite imagery and local ... » Learn More about Road to ruin: informal byways sow seeds of destruction in Colombia’s Amazon
