By Greg Braxton Los Angeles Times Fri., Oct. 19, 2018 LOS ANGELES—In the world of Hollywood, the name “Jim Carrey” means many things — In Living Color comic fireball; star of such wildly successful film comedies as Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber who has also displayed admirable dramatic range in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show; an actor who once commanded $20 million (U.S.) a film. Not many would characterize him as Moby Dick or an island. But those are some of the offbeat terms the Newmarket-born Carrey uses to refer to himself when describing his current state of mind. “I’m a big whale — I got barnacles,” he says. “When I’m around, you smell an island.” He pauses, then changes his voice as an open hand moves to his mouth, “Hey, if you smell land where there isn’t any, you’ll know Jim’s about,” he says as he erupts into a … [Read more...] about Jim Carrey’s grotesque political cartoons of Trump and more have found a home

Boom in TV animation turns up the volume on voice talent
By Neal Justin Minneapolis Star Tribune Mon., June 25, 2018 The most gut-wrenching challenge of Maile Flanagan’s long acting career was playing a boisterous teen ninja coming face to face with his long-lost mother, just a week after the actress had lost her mom in real life. “It was the hardest thing to do and one of the best things I’ve ever done,” said Flanagan, a former Minneapolis-based comedian whose credits include Grey’s Anatomy and The Station Agent. The performance wasn’t captured on a movie set or stage. It happened in a sound booth while Flanagan, 53, was overdubbing English dialogue for Naruto Uzumaki, the Japanese anime character who’s starred in six films, 700 TV episodes and 42 video games. Voice-over artists such as Flanagan are being heard like never before, leading to more work and more respect. Anyone who thinks voice acting is child’s play deserves a swift kick in the head from Flanagan’s most … [Read more...] about Boom in TV animation turns up the volume on voice talent

The best TV reboots and revivals of all time — and the worst
source ABC Reboots. Revivals. Returns. It’s hard to classify the craze of TV shows being brought back to life. Some return with all-new casts and storylines, and others pick up exactly where the original show left off as if nothing happened. But as the new “Roseanne” and other reboots before it have proven, they can be a hit with audiences and critics alike. “Roseanne premiered last week to over 18 million viewers and decent critical praise (combined with some controversy). Reboots can also be duds, though. Business Insider looked at 23 notable TV reboots and ranked them worst to best, based on how well they did with critics (using critic scores from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes). We based the ranking on the average of the reboot’s available season critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes – most only had one season. We also included the average critic score for the original series, when available, for comparison. In the case … [Read more...] about The best TV reboots and revivals of all time — and the worst
The big question hanging over the TV industry is whether or not anyone wants to watch sports on Facebook
When big sports deals are up in a few years, there’s a chance that tech companies could get some of the rights. But John Martin, CEO of Turner, thinks the TV industry is likely to hang onto valuable sports rights, despite the deep pockets of big tech. He believes fans won’t like watching sports on platforms like Facebook – and that sports broadcasting expertise is undervalued. Martin also said that TV networks are leaving ad money on the table because of limitations in measuring digital streaming. This post is part of a broader editorial series sponsored by Turner. As part of the series, Turner provided executives for two interviews. Turner did not dictate the editorial direction of these stories, nor did it influence any of the questions asked. As the TV landscape goes through seemingly constant, dynamic change, one assumption is often made about the … [Read more...] about The big question hanging over the TV industry is whether or not anyone wants to watch sports on Facebook
