Trump’s old ways colliding with new realitiesNEW YORK: Telling half-truths and outright lies. Manipulating media coverage. Pushing legal boundaries. Pressuring subordinates to do the dirty work. Believing in the force of his own personality. Accepting no personal responsibility. The playbook Donald Trump has used as a real estate developer, celebrity businessman and political candidate has, for the most part, proved effective through the first two-plus years of his presidency. He has shown an uncanny ability to wriggle out of jams that might have doomed just about any of his predecessors. That modus operandi may finally be catching up to Trump amid the House’s impeachment inquiry. The tactics that helped win the White House have jeopardized his hold on it, ensnaring him in accusations that he enlisted a foreign government to investigate a political foe and, so far, leaving him flailing against a rapidly escalating investigation. “He’s arrived at a very different … [Read more...] about Trump’s old ways colliding with new realities

Michi Calica Sotto returns to bridalwear with Vera Wang In the film Bride Wars, a panic-stricken Kate Hudson squeezes into her Vera Wang wedding gown after a bit of weight gain in a scene that goes down in chick flick history as the rebirth of Bridezilla. She quotably yells out, “You do not alter a Vera to fit you, you alter yourself to fit Vera!” To my relief, Vera Wang Manila bridal specialist Michi Calica-Sotto dispels this as a myth: “There’s a Vera Wang for every size. In fact we go all the way to size 43.” The boutique carries a total of 45 designs. The Vera Wang Gang, as Vera calls them, includes many famous brides, both fictional and real. On TV, Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf wore the Esther to her royal wedding. Ivanka Trump also wore the Esther, but without the sleeves on -- proof that no two Veras are actually alike. Locally, Isabelle Daza is the first Vera Wang Manila bride in Helena, walking into the store … [Read more...] about Michi Calica Sotto returns to bridalwear with Vera Wang

SINGAPORE: During Chinese New Year last year, retiree Kenneth Tang wanted to visit his sister-in-law at her home in Upper Bukit Timah, in a relatively secluded area he was unfamiliar with.Instead of getting driving directions with a few taps of his smartphone, the 64-year-old sat in his living room, put on his reading glasses and studied the route on the pages of his 2018 street directory.“I think GPS is more convenient and better in many ways, but I use road directories because I can have a better idea of how to get to the place I am going to,” he told CNA.Mr Tang said the directory allows for more flexible alternative route planning in the event of congestion, and gives a clearer picture of nearby car parks – crucial for peak times when every lot has been snapped up.“I use road directories also because I have been using it for years, long before GPS was available,” he added. “My friends and I who are from the older generation have been … [Read more...] about In the age of online maps, who needs street directories anymore?
