By Ravil Shirodkar and Adam Haigh India’s economy may be faltering, but its $2.1 trillion stock market has been powering to new highs as foreign investors pile into country’s shares, betting the worst may have already passed. Economic growth is at the lowest since before Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. The economy expanded 4.5% in July-September, slowing for a sixth straight quarter as deteriorating local consumption, troubled banks and a weak global outlook all took their toll. But the equity market? Now, that’s a different story. The S&P BSE Sensex Index surged 13% from a low on Sept. 19 as it rose to all-time highs. Foreigners purchased a net $5 billion, give or take, of the country’s shares so far this quarter, while domestic investors have remained buyers of equity funds. FPIs turn bullish on India, say tax cut eases worries over economy
By Abhishek Vishnoi and Nupur Acharya India’s reduction in the corporate tax rate to among Asia’s lowest was welcomed by investors as a boon that may help spur economic growth and company profits. The effective corporate tax rate for all domestic companies will be 25.2%, lowered from 30%, the government announced Friday. That reduces it to the same level as Singapore. “This move means concerns on India are quite well covered for the time being,” said Felix Lam, Hong Kong-based senior Asia Pacific equities fund manager at BNP Paribas SA. “We have to now see what companies do in terms of investments and what consumers do in terms of spending.” The benchmark Sensex Index headed for its biggest gain in a decade, climbing as much as 6.3% after the unexpected reduction. News anchor turns host of new lecture show
The News Broadcast has been airing on China Central Television at 7 pm daily for decades, and has made its main anchor, Kang Hui, a household name across the country. After presenting the program for 13 years, Kang, 47, is now taking on a new role-to host a variety show for the first time in his career. A Good Lecture, which began airing on CCTV in November, presents Kang as a "head teacher" and the studio audience are mainly made up of college students and young viewers. "I organize discussions on related topics, keep the discipline and make brief conclusions," Kang says of the show. The program also invites leaders from various circles to make presentations, which offer insight and review on their careers and lives, and deliver lectures to viewers to reflect on the achievements made by New China over the past 70 years from their individual perspectives. Bengaluru techie, woman among three held for MBA graduate’s murder
PUNE: The Sinhagad Road police have arrested three persons -- a city businessman, a techie from Bengaluru, and a woman interior designer -- in connection with the murder of a 29-year-old woman MBA graduate in her rented flat at Manikbaug. “We have arrested businessman Piyush Nitin Sancheti (34) of Sahakarnagar, techie Vasantkumar Prabhakar Gowda (31) of Bengaluru, and interior designer Sonal Sunil Sadare (29) of Ambegaon on the basis of suspicion as the three were last seen having a party with the deceased. Police search for Mohali school teacher’s husband, who is prime suspect of murder
A day after a 31-year-old teacher, Sarabjit Kaur, was shot dead in front of her five-year-old daughter while she was parking her scooter at The Knowledge Bus Global School in Kharar town of Mohali district, police are tracking her estranged husband, Harvinder Singh, 35, who has emerged as the prime suspect.“Her husband is absconding. His mobile phone is switched off. We have started a hunt to arrest him. We are going through his call details to know with whom he was in touch before the crime,” a police official said.The police are tracking the CCTV footage that shows a man fleeing the crime spot with a shawl covering his face.
