Calanogas is first Lanao del Sur town declared 'drug cleared' John Unson (Philstar.com) - August 27, 2019 - 12:39pm LANAO DEL SUR, Philippines — An inter-agency oversight committee has declared Calanogas town in Lanao del Sur as "drug cleared," the first of 39 towns in the province. Juvenal Azurin, regional director of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, said Tuesday the declaration was based on the panel's findings that all 17 barangays in Calanogas have been cleared of drug traffickers and dependents. According to Dangerous Drugs Board guidelines, barangays are considered "drug cleared" is there no drug supply in the village, there is no transhipment activity, and no clandestine drug laboratories or warehouses in the area. Davao del Sur solon dons traditional gown in honor of IPs (Philstar.com) - July 22, 2019 - 2:42pm MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker from Davao del Sur wore a gown inspired by indigenous communities for the president's State of the Nation Address in honor of the indigenous peoples (IP) community in her home province. Rep. Mercedes "Didi" Cagas (Davao del Sur) donned her B'laan-inspired gown styled and designed by Rene Salud at the red carpet. Her outfit is inspired by the traditional garb of the IPs in the town of Kiblawan in Davel del Sur. Cagas wore a gown made of T'nalak, a cloth woven by the T'bolis of Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, in serpentine cut partnered with a light-colored shawl. Dozens hurt as quake rattles Surigao del Sur BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — Twenty-five people were injured and several homes, churches and other buildings were damaged after an earthquake hit parts of Surigao del Sur early yesterday. The quake, which measured magnitude 5.5 according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), struck towns located along the northeast coast of Mindanao at 4:42 a.m. at a depth of five kilometers. The epicenter was traced to Carrascal town in Surigao del Sur where the quake was felt at Intensity 6, Phivolcs said. Phivolcs reported seven less intense aftershocks. Most of the damage was reported in the town of Madrid near the epicenter, where residents claimed objects were seen flying when the strong earthquake struck.
