Shiv Sena opposes Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha
NEW DELHI: The Shiv Sena, which voted in favour of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha, opposed it in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, saying the draft law should have been debated on the basis of "humanity not religion". The Sena does not need to prove how "staunch Hindu" and "patriotic" the party is, Sanjay Raut said while participating in a debate on the Bill in the Upper House. "We should discuss this Bill based on humanity not on religion. There is a difference between intruders and refugees," said Raut, whose party is a former ally of the BJP. The Sena recently formed government in Maharashtra along with the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The Bill, which is being debated in Rajya Sabha, seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there. New Delhi: The Shiv Sena on Wednesday abstained from voting on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha as its three members walked out of the House before the vote. The Sena had voted in favour of the Bill in the Lok Sabha two days ago and the U-turn signals that it has caved under pressure from its new Maharashtra ally, the Congress, which has made clear its displeasure over Sena's support to the bill. ‘Citizenship Amendment Bill Won’t Harm Minorities Including Muslims’: Amit Shah In Rajya Sabha
New Delhi: Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that India can never be 'Muslim-mukt' (free from Muslims) while replying to a debate on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. "Javed Ali Khan (Samajwadi Party leader) said that we will become 'Muslim-mukt'. Javed Ali Sahab, this country will not be free from Muslims even if you want it to be," said Shah. Replying to a statement of Congress MP Kapil Sibal, Shah said that Muslims should not fear the Bill as it does not strip them of their citizenship. "Kapil Sibalji said that Muslims are not scared of us. They should not be scared and you do not make them scared.
