New Delhi: Himalayan glaciers are highly sensitive to climate change and are rapidly shrinking, posing a big threat to the populations that rely on them, according to scientific explanations. Besides the ecosystem services that the glaciers provide, their melting increases the risk of runoffs and floods as recently seen with the Uttarakhand glacier disaster that claimed 26 lives and 197 people still reported missing with rescue operations underway. The science behind what is currently happening in the Himalayas was forecasted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 2019 report that says glaciers would retreat in the upcoming years, causing landslides and floods. Himalayan glaciers play an important role in South Asia, providing drinking water and water resources for agriculture, hydropower and biodiversity. Glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region are a crucial water supply for the 240 million people who live in the region, including 86 million Indians, ... » Learn More about Explained: Himalayan glaciers sensitive to climate change, rapidly shrinking

IIT Madras Researchers identify a Sustainable, High-Yielding Alternative Source for Anti-Cancer Drug Camptothecin
CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Researchers have identified a sustainable and high-yielding alternative source for the anti-cancer drug Camptothecin . This novel microbial fermentation process can be an economically-efficient method of production to fulfill the market demand at a large scale. Topotecan and Irinotecan are two widely used anticancer drugs, which are produced by using Camptothecin as the lead molecule. More than a dozen derivatives and conjugates of Camptothecin are under various stages of clinical trials for anti-cancer applications. Camptothecin is an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata and the Indian tree Nothapodytes nimmoniana. Nearly 1,000 tons of plant material is required to extract just one ton of Camptothecin. Due to extensive overharvesting to meet the market demand both these plants are now critically endangered. The N. nimmoniana population has seen more than a 20% decline in the last decade alone. In October 2020, it announced its first slate of mobile-first licensed and original shows for the Indian market along with its first gaming partner in the country. To be sure, India was one of the first markets where Snap Inc. made investments to localise its product, including building local augmented-reality creator communities, adding local content, and investing in local marketing initiatives. Covid-linked syndrome in children is growing and cases are more severe
Fifteen-year-old Braden Wilson was frightened of Covid-19. He was careful to wear masks and only left his house, in Simi Valley, California, for things like orthodontist checkups and visits with his grandparents nearby. But somehow, the virus found Braden. It wreaked ruthless damage in the form of an inflammatory syndrome that, for unknown reasons, strikes some young people, usually several weeks after infection by the coronavirus. Doctors at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles put the teenager on a ventilator and a heart-lung bypass machine. But they could not stop his major organs from failing. On Jan. 5, “they officially said he was brain-dead,” his mother, Amanda Wilson, recounted, sobbing. “My boy was gone.” Doctors across the country have been seeing a striking increase in the number of young people with the condition Braden had, which is called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children or MIS-C. Even more worrisome, they say, is that more patients are now very sick ... » Learn More about Covid-linked syndrome in children is growing and cases are more severe
