By Ben Spurr Transportation Reporter Thu., Nov. 1, 2018 For the next six weeks, the location of Santa’s secret workshop is a strip mall in North Etobicoke. That’s where volunteers and staffers working for the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund will be toiling in a makeshift warehouse to pack and deliver gift boxes to 45,000 disadvantaged children across the Toronto area. Created by Star founder Joseph Atkinson in 1906, the fund has been making the Christmas season brighter for struggling families for more than a century. It takes a tremendous amount of planning and hard work to deliver the gift boxes, each of which contains gender-neutral but age-appropriate toys, games, books, clothing, and necessities like toothbrushes and toothpaste. Many of those who work to distribute the boxes have decided to do so because they know firsthand how much it means for families to get a helping hand over the holidays. Australian conditioning coach Justin Fortune’s wife Tamara Frapasella was in Kuala Lumpur to witness Manny Pacquiao’s win over Lucas Matthysse for the WBA welterweight title over a week ago. While Fortune was engaged in Pacquiao’s training camp in Manila and General Santos City for eight weeks, Tamara managed their 3,600-square foot Los Angeles gym aside from taking care of their 10-month-old twins Crayden and Sophia. Tamara was in Kuala Lumpur for a week and left the care of the twins to her parents and Fortune’s mother who flew in from Australia. “I spend about 60 hours a week in the gym,” said Tamara, a former model who now produces movies and was recently involved in the recent “Transformers” sequel. “We’ve got about 690 members with at least 25 pros coming in to train from different countries like Armenia, Russia, Ukraine and of course, the Philippines.
