Woman’s body pulled from Mae Ping River in Chiang Mai
Police and rescue staff in Chiang Mai have retrieved the body of a woman from the Mae Ping River near Nawarat Bridge. The woman, aged estimated to be 40-45 years old, was wearing a white T-shirt, a pair of shorts and white socks. Forensic staff estimate she had been dead for at least 2 days before the body was discovered. They found wounds on her head and chin, believing she had been hit with a hard object. There were also “several holes” in her body, with blood oozing out of the wounds. Police speculate she was a victim of assault and the perpetrator dumped her body into the river to conceal the crime. The body was sent to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the cause of death, while police are checking missing-persons reports for clues to identify the victim. India’s daily COVID-19 cases rise to record for fifth time this week
NEW DELHI: India's daily coronavirus cases on Saturday (Apr 10) rose by a record for the fifth time this week and deaths surged to the highest in more than five months, with hospitals and crematoriums overflowing in parts of the country. New cases in the world's second-most populous country have totalled the most of anywhere in the world over the last two weeks. India's overall tally of 13.21 million is the third-highest globally, just shy of Brazil and below the worst affected country, the United States. The second surge in infections, which has spread much more rapidly than the first one that peaked in September, has forced many states to impose fresh curbs but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has refused to impose a national lockdown given the high economic costs. Authorities in Maharashtra, the Indian state with the highest cases, have ordered a weekend lockdown that will end early on Monday. Mega cities such as Mumbai, the country's financial centre and Maharashtra's capital, ... » Learn More about India’s daily COVID-19 cases rise to record for fifth time this week
Annuar Musa says he listened to audio clip 10 times, claims it is genuine
PETALING JAYA: The audio recording of a conversation allegedly between Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is genuine, claims Tan Sri Annuar Musa. In a report by Sinar Harian, the former Barisan Nasional secretary-general claimed he could recognise the voices of Anwar and Zahid in the recording after listening to it multiple times on Wednesday (April 7) night. "I (listened) to it 10 times last night. I felt I could recognise the voices and I'm 100% confident it is authentic," he told reporters during the launch of the MySmart Wilayah Blueprint at the Federal Territories Ministry on Thursday (April 8). Annuar added he was disappointed because the recording, if genuine, contradicts Ahmad Zahid's declaration of not cooperating with Pakatan Harapan in the 15th General Election, made at the Umno general assembly last month. "I'm not questioning freedom of speech but the contents of the conversation clearly show that there are plans, togetherness and ... » Learn More about Annuar Musa says he listened to audio clip 10 times, claims it is genuine
Ledecky adjusts routine for prime time glory bid
(Reuters) - Katie Ledecky and other U.S. Olympic hopefuls will get a taste of Tokyo at a Mission Viejo swim meet this weekend that will provide a dress rehearsal for the Games with morning finals and evening preliminaries. Not since the 2008 Beijing Olympics have swimmers had to deal with the scheduling flip flop put in place to allow broadcasters to televise races live in prime time back in the United States. At those Olympics it was Michael Phelps and his quest for eight gold medals in the spotlight while in Tokyo it will be Ledecky and Caeleb Dressel getting the prime time treatment. Having claimed five gold medals from the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics, Ledecky could double her career haul in Tokyo where she will swim the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 metres freestyle events as well as relays. Ledecky's Olympic program is certainly worthy of prime time, highlighted by the 24-year-old's bid for an historic double by winning the 1,500m, a new event for the women in Tokyo, ... » Learn More about Ledecky adjusts routine for prime time glory bid
How Philippine Cinema responded to the Covid-19 crisis
Almost 10 months ago, I had one of the biggest surprises of my life when The Manila Times Chairman Emeritus Dr. Dante A. Ang offered to me this Sunday Times Magazine column while we were having a meeting on our partnership for the “Sine Sandaan” on The Manila Times TV (TMT TV). I never thought I would ever be a newspaper columnist, but Dr. Ang made me realize the importance of communicating the projects and programs of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and the rest of the film and audiovisual industry. 1 of 4 What especially struck me was Dr. Ang’s compassion for and solidarity with Philippine Cinema. He placed great importance in supporting the industry, especially the independent filmmakers who need more platforms to make their voices heard and I am so grateful to Dr. Ang for this wonderful opportunity to share the latest in Philippine Cinema, particularly the initiatives of the FDCP and other groups and ... » Learn More about How Philippine Cinema responded to the Covid-19 crisis
Messi leads Barcelona comeback against Betis
MADRID: Lionel Messi scored his fastest league goal as a substitute as his strike 136 seconds after coming on inspired Barcelona to a 3-2 victory over Real Betis on Sunday (Monday in Manila). Messi was among several key players rested with Ronald Koeman seemingly prioritizing Wednesday’s Copa del Rey semifinal against Sevilla ahead of Barca’s fading title challenge in La Liga. Defeat would have called that decision into question, but Messi drove in an equalizer less than three minutes after coming on in the second half and then helped set up Francisco Trincao to score a late winner, the 21-year-old’s first goal for Barcelona. “He changed the game,” said Koeman when asked about Messi. “It’s a bit about the cup game, but we also have to decide when the best moment is to rest players. The cup is the shortest route to a title this season.” Koeman’s side sits seven points behind La Liga’s leaders Atletico Madrid, which has played two games fewer and faces Celta Vigo at home on ... » Learn More about Messi leads Barcelona comeback against Betis
