China’s coal consumption seen rising in 2021, imports steady
BEIJING : China's coal consumption is expected to continue rising in 2021 despite Beijing's pledges to boost the use of clean energy and curb greenhouse gas emissions, the China National Coal Association said on Wednesday. China, the world's biggest coal consumer, saw overall consumption of the fossil fuel increase by 0.6% in 2020 from a year earlier to around 4.04 billion tonnes, according to Reuters' calculations based on official data. "Central government has said it will continue to implement a proactive fiscal policy and a prudent monetary policy, and meanwhile offer the necessary supports for economic recovery ... That would push up coal demand in 2021," the association said in a statement. It also forecast China's coal output would increase in 2021, with the launch of new and advanced coal capacity in major coal mining regions such as Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang . But central Chinese regions such as Hunan and Jiangxi will continue shut down ... » Learn More about China’s coal consumption seen rising in 2021, imports steady
Why the rise of China’s military worries the world
There is growing alarm at the inexorable rise of China, both of its military prowess and its aggressive bullying of other countries plus its subjugation of whole portions of its own population. IMAGE: People's Liberation Army soldiers in Beijing. Photograph: Jason Lee/Reuters Under Chairman Xi Jinping, China has accelerated its militarisation, with constant remonstrations for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) to modernise and to boost its loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Ominously, Xi spends a lot of time telling the populace to prepare for an all-out 'struggle'. At the same time, Xi has stamped his authority on every single aspect of Chinese society so as to control the thinking and behavior of his 1.4 billion subjects. There is growing fear among China's neighbors, and Western countries like the United States, that China will stoke a war. For now, the PLA is using 'gray zone' tactics, behavior short of armed struggle but which is nonetheless coercive ... » Learn More about Why the rise of China’s military worries the world
Top China, US epidemiologists call for global cooperation to fight COVID
GUANGZHOU - Leading Chinese respiratory disease expert Zhong Nanshan and top US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci have called for global solidarity and cooperation to fight against COVID-19. The epidemiologists exchanged their views in an online conversation hosted by the University of Edinburgh Tuesday night Beijing time. The two believed that global cooperation is essential in the epidemic control. Novel coronavirus is an enemy of all mankind, said Zhong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a leading expert in China's respiratory disease research. "If the coronavirus still spreads in some individual countries, COVID-19 cannot be said to be fully controlled worldwide. If we want to end this epidemic, we need appropriate science-based, evidence-based decisions by decision-makers in each country. Everyone should do their best. So we need global solidarity," Zhong said. Zhong believed that some unscientific, inhumane means of "natural immunity" should ... » Learn More about Top China, US epidemiologists call for global cooperation to fight COVID
Advisers: Dual circulation key to China’s development
Strategy will consolidate nation's key role in global market, say experts China is seeking a new position in the global economy, aiming to simultaneously become a "world market" and a "world factory", which will consolidate its key role in the global market, with deeper integration into global society, according to top-level policy advisers. That is a blueprint not only for guiding this year's economic work, but also setting a basic principle for China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25), indicating policymakers' determination to further open the domestic market. Legislators and political advisers will gather in Beijing this week to discuss the key issues of China's development at the annual sessions of the National People's Congress and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. To achieve the goal, China will stabilize imports and expand exports, continually promote cross-border trade and investment and optimize the business environment ... » Learn More about Advisers: Dual circulation key to China’s development
Greece eager to continue cooperation with China in post-pandemic era, says minister
ATHENS - The Greek government is eager to continue cooperation with China in the post-pandemic era, as China has contributed significantly to Greece's economic recovery in recent years, Greek Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis told Xinhua in a recent interview. The COVID-19 pandemic plunged the Greek economy into recession. The country has just started to recover after a severe decade-long debt crisis that pushed it to the brink of bankruptcy. Priorities and timetables in the government's plans have changed, as has happened across the world. As mass vaccinations have brought hope for an exit from the health crisis, Greece wants to return to the right track and resume its collaboration with China in many fields at full speed, the minister said. "We are eager to continue our plans and our follow-up of investments here in Greece and find ways to leave behind all this pandemic crisis and continue our lives," Georgiadis said, ahead of the "two sessions" in ... » Learn More about Greece eager to continue cooperation with China in post-pandemic era, says minister
