China’s President hails ‘complete victory’ in poverty fight
China on Thursday held a high-profile celebration to mark what its President Xi Jinping described as “a complete victory” in eliminating absolute poverty. Mr. Xi said over the past eight years under his term, 98.99 million poor in rural areas had been lifted out of poverty while all the 832 designated “impoverished counties” and 128,000 “impoverished villages” had been removed from the government’s list. He described the lifting of close to 100 million people out of poverty in eight years as “a miracle” that would “go down in history”, offering “a China example” to developing countries, although he said “no other country” could do so “in such as short time”. China’s elimination of absolute poverty is defined according to the government’s poverty line of $2.30 in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) per person a day, which is higher than the international poverty line of $1.90 PPP. According to the World Bank, China has lifted more than 850 million out of poverty since its ... » Learn More about China’s President hails ‘complete victory’ in poverty fight
China’s coal consumption share falls to 56.8% at end-2020
BEIJING : China cut its coal use to 56.8% of energy consumption at the end of 2020, maintaining its target of below 58%, but overall coal consumption continued to rise amid record industrial output and the completion of dozens of coal-fired power plants. The rapid rollout of renewable-energy capacity and the growing use of natural gas has helped reduce the share of coal consumption from around 68% over the last decade and 57.7% a year earlier, but overall coal use has not peaked. Coal consumption in the world's biggest coal user and greenhouse gas emitter grew 0.6% last year, the fourth consecutive increase, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Sunday. The share of "clean" energy - including natural gas, hydropower, nuclear and wind power - rose 1 percentage point to 24.3% of consumption, it said. Energy consumption increased by 2.2% to 4.98 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent last year, with crude oil demand growing by 3.3% and natural gas by 7.2%. ... » Learn More about China’s coal consumption share falls to 56.8% at end-2020

Across China: Rapid-fire Douyin videos revive faded craft glory
Video Player Close HANGZHOU, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Wen Shishan, 57, wandered in a bamboo grove, holding a machete in search of ideal materials to make oil-paper umbrellas, an old craft dating back to over a millennium ago. Situated in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, Wen's workshop boasts more than 800,000 fans on the popular Chinese short-video platform Douyin. The digital renaissance of the ancient handicraft can be traced in part to Zhang Jianhua, a short video maker born in the 1990s. In 2018, Zhang began to help Wen film the production process of the oil-paper umbrellas, driven by a fierce reluctance to let the fine art vanish into thin air. As Wen and his delicate artifacts flicker across hundreds of millions of smartphone screens, the old master feels increasingly heartened. "For the first time in my over 30 years of making the umbrellas, so many people are taking an interest in the craft.
