Thailand’s property market waits for an end to Covid-19

The Coronavirus outbreak poses challenges for Thailand’s property market as potential Chinese condominium buyers remain stranded in China. Meanwhile, some believe that the outbreak may bring opportunities for non-Chinese buyers and in the long-run, the Chinese may be looking for an overseas refuge in the event of these types of emergencies popping up again Through all this, there will be a certain level of pent up demand for Thai real estate. Of course, it’s not just the Chinese unable to come and inspect potential buys, the rest of the world is also mostly shut out of Thailand. Market remains weak The pandemic is hurting the condominium market as Chinese nationals were accounting for half of the international buyers in Thailand, or 57.6% of the total foreign condo owners in 2018. Vichai Viratkapan, acting director-general of the Real Estate Information Centre says that 50% of Chinese condo transfers are expected to disappear in the first 2 quarters of this year and the total ... » Learn More about Thailand’s property market waits for an end to Covid-19

Asian markets fall on inflation fears

TOKYO: Asian markets took another blow Friday after Federal Reserve boss Jerome Powell failed to soothe fears of a surge in inflation fueled by the expected global economic recovery, which many warn could force the central bank to hike interest rates earlier than thought. While the rollout of vaccines, slowing infections, easing of lockdowns and an imminent new stimulus are breathing life back into economies, investors are increasingly worried ultra-loose monetary policies — a key pillar of a year-long equity surge — will be wound down to deal with an expected spike in prices. That has led to a sharp sell-off across world markets with the tech-rich Nasdaq on Thursday almost sinking into correction territory — a 10 percent drop from recent highs — having touched a record peak last month. Powell reiterated that the Fed would not tighten its policies until its goals of full employment and consistently high inflation had been met, and that was likely to be some time away. As the ... » Learn More about Asian markets fall on inflation fears

Chloe Zhao, Chinese director of Nomadland, faces controversy at home

Chloe Zhao's success – she's the first Asian woman and the second woman ever to win a Golden Globe for best director for her film Nomadland – has not been met with universal applause in her country of birth. The Beijing-born filmmaker, now a leading Oscar contender, instead finds the news of her success overshadowed by a nationalist backlash regarding her citizenship and her identity. Censors have removed some social media posts about the film, which has raised questions about whether it will still be released in China. Over the past week, Chinese web users questioned whether Zhao, who was educated in the UK and the US, was still a Chinese citizen and if she could be counted as Chinese given a critical comment she made about the country in 2013. Even as some celebrated her win, others dug up two interviews where Zhao said things that they considered an “insult to China”. Now publicity about the film has been removed from social media, and at least two hashtags related to ... » Learn More about Chloe Zhao, Chinese director of Nomadland, faces controversy at home

How the Coronavirus Pandemic has Influenced the FX Market

It is hard to keep up with world events in these turbulent times. But as a FX Market trader, one should always be aware of the news not to miss the right moment for entering the market. The unfortunate outbreak of COVID-19 is the global headliner these months. Usually, when a crisis like this hits the market, local currencies suffer, and people tend to invest in reliable, less volatile assets like gold, for example. We have seen spikes of volatility for currency pairs that included CNY at the beginning of 2020 year. The AUD was also affected as it is the biggest trading partner of China. But here is what we witness in the market now. Investors still tend to support traditional currencies like USD, EUR, CHF, and JPY. The EUR/CHF has reached the highest price since early January. At the same time, more challenging assets like Aussi, Kiwi, and Dow Jones are getting back to normal and enjoying the appetite for risky trading. Oil prices are on the back foot rising US inventories. ... » Learn More about How the Coronavirus Pandemic has Influenced the FX Market

Private Bad Debt and Public Debt Threat to Bond Markets

Global bond markets may plunge into a financial crisis if private bad debt and public debt mount, while global stock markets could fall sharply if the Federal Reserve (Fed) pulls back on its quantitative easing (QE) after the central bank signalled a tapering in its latest statement. Investing in Thai real estate investment trust (REITs) may prove an alternative to these markets as it is more resilient to these external factors, Win Promphaet, chief investment officer at Principal Asset Management told the Bangkok Post in an interview. Mr Win said the US and global stock markets have been bullish recently, mainly due to the Fed’s continued QE practices by purchasing bonds to add liquidity to the economy and financial system. But if the Fed slows or stops QE, it could cause the stock market to panic. The global economy also risks a debt crisis due to so many countries borrowing money to stimulate their economies or doing QE by lowering interest rates to help businesses. India’s Government Bans TikTok and 58 Other Apps from China

India ’s ministry of electronics and information technology has issued a permanent ban imposed on video app TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps, Indian media reported late on Monday. When it first imposed the ban, the Indian government gave the 59 apps a chance to explain their position on compliance with privacy and security requirements, The Times of India reported. The companies, which include ByteDance ’s popular video-sharing app TikTok and Tencent Holdings ’ WeChat , were also asked to respond to a list of questions, the Reuters said. “The government is not satisfied with the response/explanation given by these companies. Hence, the ban for these 59 apps is permanent now,” business newspaper Livemint quoted a source familiar with the notices as saying. It said the notices were issued last week. The ministry’s June order stated that the apps were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”. The order, which ... » Learn More about India’s Government Bans TikTok and 58 Other Apps from China

Why Thailand’s is Losing its Battle with Illicit Narcotics from Myanmar

The days of small drug busts in Thailand are long over, since at least 2017 seizures of illicit narcotics have involved shipments of multiple millions of “yaba” speed tablets and truckloads of high-purity crystal methamphetamine weighing hundreds of kilograms and often over a tonne. But even by the standards of the kingdom’s new normal, the size of the latest bust was a jaw-dropper that stunned even seasoned cops and counter-narcotics officials. On November 12 an intelligence tip-off led police to a warehouse in Chachoengsao province close to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport where they found a massive stash of ketamine, or “Super K”, a hallucinogenic drug increasingly popular in East Asia. Weighing in at over 11.5 tonnes with a street value of close to US$1 billion, it marked the biggest interdiction of illicit drugs in the history of a country that has been the main transit route for illicit narcotics spilling out of Myanmar since the 1950s. The unprecedented seizure threw ... » Learn More about Why Thailand’s is Losing its Battle with Illicit Narcotics from Myanmar
